How does sand effect the germination and growth of seeds compared to vermiculite? Hypothesis: If we grow seeds in sand and vermiculite, then the height of the stems will be different. vs. Sand Constant: The seeds growing in s Dependent Variable: The height of the stem Independent Variable: vermiculite and and vermiculite Control: vermiculite We needed to have a control because we needed something to compare our experiment with.

Materials and Methods Five containers of vermiculite, five containers of sand, seeds, and water Small, rectangular, plastic pot Planted seeds in five containers of vermiculite and sand. Added water. Recorded the growth in one week. Every 2-4 days added water. Every 6-8 days recorded growth. Measured every week.

Data Date Seeds in Vermiculite Seeds in Sand 10/12 Planted seeds 10/14 watered 10/27 No growth A little growth 10/31 Still no growth Sprouted some

Results and Conclusions Our result was that seeds grow better in sand than vermiculite. Our hypothesis was correct because the seed in sand grew almost one inch and the one in vermiculite didn’t even grow. It probably grew faster because there was more room for the roots to spread and so the plants can sprout. It grew how it was like because it absorbed enough water and had enough room to sprout roots to get the water. Vermiculite would have grown if we put more water in it. My problem was why did the other seed not grow?
