Generation Rx: multi-pronged approach Generation Rx is an educational program of: Our mission: educate people of all ages about the potential dangers of misusing prescription medications and prevent prescription drug misuse. Generation Rx works to end prescription drug misuse through prevention education, drug take back, best practices in pain management and community collaborations. The program was created through a partnership with the Cardinal Health Foundation and The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy in 2009. Today we will focus on the prevention education component of Generation Rx, and will also share how the Missouri Pharmacy Association can help communities bring this prevention education to everyone.

We’ve got a toolkit for that… We have a toolkit of educational resources for every age/audience (clockwise): elementary, teen, adult, university, patient, workplace and older adults. Today we will talk more about the education for elementary, teen and adults. All the resources can be downloaded for free on GenerationRx.org, click on the Take Action page. Generation Rx has a complete collection of what you’ll need to lead a conversation or presentation in your community about medication safety. We’ve developed a facilitators guide that includes suggestions on how to present, answers to frequently asked questions, and how to get started. Our presentations, games and activities all include detailed talking points for the facilitators so they do not have to prepare any of the information themselves. We try to make it as easy as possible for medication safety education to be shared throughout communities. Most of these educational resources are available in Spanish too.

You don’t have to be a healthcare professional to understand or share this information. The messages are very similar for each audience, just taught differently based on age (games/activities for kids, vs. more traditional PPT presentation learning for adults)

Generation Rx adult educational resources These are visual examples of the Generation Rx Adult toolkit. This education is great to share in civic organizations, faith-based organizations, PTAs, athletics, neighborhood associations, health fairs and other events.

So you’d like to talk to youth…. Elementary education focus: Introduction to medication and how to use safely Learning through games/activities No mention of misuse/abuse Teen education focus: What is misuse, how to use safely How to turn down invitation to misuse Alternative ways to handle stress Learning through games/activities As I mentioned earlier, Generation Rx has education for all ages. But there is a great opportunity to education children, in all grades, about medication safety and prescription drug misuse. I want to highlight the elementary and teen education resources with you. Ohio State University College of Pharmacy and the Cardinal Health Foundation work closely with prevention specialists and educators to include the most age appropriate content in the Generation Rx education. With the elementary school education, there is a strong focus on introducing what medicine is (this is needed since most households have prescription or OTC medicines in the home and children see it being taken by adults or may be taking medication themselves). The children learn about medicine, pharmacists and how to take medicine safely through games and activities. It’s important to note that there is no mention of misuse or abuse in the elementary school education. For the teen resources, the education focuses on defining what prescription drug misuse is (taking more than prescribed, sharing medicines, taking for a purpose other than what it is prescribed for) and really focuses on sharing facts, practicing how to turn down the invitation to misuse and alternative ways that teens can handle stress. Teens are learning through interactive games/activities that are ideally played at a classroom or small group level. Where to use the Generation Rx elementary and teen resources: 1. Classrooms: Add into the health education, career day, red ribbon week, poison prevention week, etc.. Schedule presentations well in advance 2. Youth group organizations: Faith-based, Girl Scouts, athletic teams, etc. 3. Community action meetings/local task forces like this one

Pharmacists can help! Medication safety experts Missouri Pharmacy Association and its members are here to help Provide medication safety expertise to coalitions/task forces Educate in schools, community organizations, in the workplace and with patients Pharmacists are really the medication safety experts in healthcare. We talk to our patients everyday about how to use medicines correctly, and we are in every town, county and city around the state. Pharmacists are expertly trained to talk about prescription drug misuse prevention, and use the Generation Rx resources across the country to share simple medication safety education with people. The Missouri Pharmacy Association, which has several hundred members across the state, supports Generation Rx and strongly encourages communities to engage pharmacists in the effort to fight the opioid epidemic.
