Vasco Nunez de Balboa By: Will Taylor

Early life: Vasco Nunez de Balboa was born around 1475 in Jerez de los Caballeros, Spain.His mother was Lady de Badajoz, and his father was the nobleman, Nuño Arias de Balboa. Little is known of his early childhood except that he was the third of four boys in his family. In the earlier part of his life he served as a page and squire to Lord of Moguer. Inspired by Columbus’s journeys Balboa decided to follow in his foot steps. At age 25 he left on a ship commanded by Rodrigo de Bastidas.

Voyages Vasco Nunez de Balboa left for the New World in 1500. He spent 4 years as a pig farmer. Years later he escaped his creditors on a boat, with his dog, which was going to San Sebastian. In 1510, he made a colony called Darien. Afterwards he became Governor of Veragua. 3 years later he led a journey to find the South Sea (Pacific Ocean). On September 25,1513 Balboa found the Pacific Ocean. After the discovery It made Panama a huge trading center for Spain.

Death Balboa and four friends were arrested on false charges on was found guilty. At age 44 on 1/15/1519 Vasco Nunez de Balboa (After 3 swings with the ax) was executed.
