Student Employment Definition Full time undergraduate students can work up to 19 hours per week on campus or off campus. Applications available through the Job Mine portal on the University Career Center website. Today we’re going to do an icebreaker about Student Employment. When I say “Student Employment” as an Enriching or High Impact Experience – what do you think of? That’s right, having a job as a student. At UTEP, we employ hundreds of undergraduates on campus, most at 19 hours per week in various capacities all over campus. Student employees make a great contribution to the operation of the university and to their own professional development. Many students, of course, work off campus as well in businesses all over El Paso [When you click again, the definition will appear.] How many of you worked in high school? Work now? Work on campus? How many of you would like to work on campus? What are some of the student employment opportunities around campus? [in offices, research labs, new student orientation leaders, peer mentors/leaders/tutors, in the library, at the Rec Center, in food service, at Special Events, etc. Why do you think UTEP tries to employ as many students as possible? [help students with finances to attend school, get experience in their field, have professional development opportunities, get to know faculty and staff, help the university.] UTEP is especially supportive of hiring undergraduates because we believe it’s beneficial to work on campus since we care about your academic success and will work around your student responsibilities. No matter what your major, if you are interested in working on campus, there are opportunities here.

Student Employment Icebreaker Hand Shake – Elevator Speech You are in the Education building waiting for the elevator to the 9th floor. Dr. Natalicio enters the elevator with you and says she’s looking to hire an undergraduate for her office. You have 1 minute to tell her your story – Name, major, academic and professional goals, what you like about UTEP, and one more interesting thing she will remember. Go around the room. Shake hands (good handshakes, not wimpy ones). Give your Elevator Speech. Repeat. OK, now for today’s activity. [Paraphrase the slide instructions.] Take a minute to come up with what you want to say. [You can have participants jot down some notes if the room works for that but OK if it doesn’t work. Don’t take too long having people look for pens and paper.} How was that? Elevator speeches and good handshakes are really important for job interviews, tabling events, and random meetings. Having a good one ready is one way to demonstrate your professionalism. Who has the best handshake? Who has a great Elevator Speech?
