Tax, Tip, Commission SB 11-2 Pages 119-120

tax Tax is something added onto the original bill. To calculate tax: Multiply the total bill by the tax amount in decimal form. Add the tax to the total bill

Example 1 A shirt costs $19.99, the tax rate is 6%. How much is the shirt after tax? Tax amount = 6% 6% = .06 $19.99 (.06) = $ 19.99 (.06)= $1.20 2. $19.99 + $1.20 = $21.19

Example 2 A pair of jeans cost $49.95, the tax rate is 5%. Find the total cost of the jeans, after tax. Tax amount = 5% 5% = .05 $49.95 (.05) = $49.95 (.05)= $2.50 2. $49.95 + $2.50 = $52.45

Tip Tip is something added onto the original bill. To calculate tip: Multiply the total bill by the tip amount in decimal form. Add the tip to the total bill

Example 1 Total Bill = $46.25 Tip = 15% 15% = 0.15 $46.25 (.15) = $46.25 (.15) = $6.94 2. bill + tip $46.25 + $6.94 = $53.19

Example 2 Total Bill = $64.97 Tip = 20% 20% = 0.20 $64.97 (.20) = $64.97 (.20) = $12.99 2. bill + tip $64.97 + $12.99 = $77.96

Commission Commission is something added onto the original bill. To calculate commission: Determine the total of the sales Multiply the percent and the total

Example 1 A realestate agent earns a commission when he or she sells a home. The commission is 5%. If the agent sells a $400,000, a $250,000 and a $300,000 house in one month, what is the commission for the month? Determine the total of the sales. 400,000 + 250,000 + 300,000 = $950,000 2. Multiply the percent by the total 0.05 ∙ 950,000 = $475, 000 Commission = $475,000

Example 2 A realtor sells a house for $460,000. If she earns 3% of the house’s price as a commission, how much is her commission? Determine the total of the sales. $460, 000 2. Multiply the percent by the total 0.03 ∙ 460,000 = Commission = $13,800
