Working With Sources EngageNY.org

Objectives for this Session Teach students how to analyze a single source and across sources. EngageNY.org

Writing Standard 9 CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W. 9-10/11-12.9 Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research. A. Apply grades 9-10/11-12 reading standards to literature B. Apply grades 9-10/11-12 reading standards to literary nonfiction. What is challenging about this standard for teachers and students? How is this standard reflected in the subshifts? EngageNY.org

EngageNY.org

Analyzing a Single Source Select one of the texts that aligned well to one of the inquiry questions you revised. Reread that text, closely this time, with that inquiry question as a guiding question. Your job is to develop an evidence-based claim about this text. EngageNY.org

Analyzing Across Sources Use the same question or another one you revised. Re-examine each of the three texts in the packet, using that question as a guiding question. Use the Forming Evidence-Based Claims tool to develop a claim across those texts. EngageNY.org

Discuss What did you do—what steps did you take in your analysis? How does this help students meet Standard 9? In what ways does this address these subshifts: Work with sources: gather, assess, synthesize, analyze, integrate. Follow the inquiry process What steps will teachers need to take to ensure productive inquiry at this stage? EngageNY.org
