What is the difference between a psychological and physiological dependency?
Drug Classifications… Stimulants: Cocaine, Meth, MDMA (ecstasy) & Nicotine Depressants:Alcohol, Xanax, Valium & Barbiturates Hallucinogens: LSD, PCP, MDMA, marijuana (THC) & Psilocybin (Mushrooms) Opiates/Narcotics: Heroine, Morphine, Codeine, Oxycontin
Why do people develop a dependency to drugs? Drug use (even one time) increases certain brain chemicals. Most drugs target the “reward system” by flooding the brain with dopamine. Dopamine regulates: movement, emotion, motivation & feelings of pleasure. Stimulating the brain with drugs produces euphoric (Intense Pleasure) effects. Euphoria reinforces the behavior teaching the user to repeat.
Effects on the brain… All drugs alter the brain’s pleasure circuit (reward). Drugs change the way our brain works by affecting chemical neurotransmission. examples: - LSD & Heroine mimic effects of natural neurotransmission. - Cocaine interferes with molecules responsible for transmission of neurotransmitters back to the neurons they came from. - Meth causes greater amounts of brain chemicals (2-10x)
