Physics and its language Prof.ssa Babbo Paola Liceo Scientifico Vitruvio- Avezzano a.s. 2014-2015

“Physics and its language” and you’ll meet a lot of quantities. You’ll read the text “Physics and its language” and you’ll meet a lot of quantities. But what is a quantity?

( a property) that can be measured using an instrument. Quantity is something ( a property) that can be measured using an instrument. Time / chronometer

We can classify quantities in: QUANTITY BASE Q. DERIVED Q.

(magnitude and direction) QUANTITY SCALAR Q. (magnitude) VECTOR Q. (magnitude and direction) or in

Quantity has a unit (unit of measurement) Time - second t = 5 s Length -meter l = 4m Force -Newton F = 2N and usually we use the unit in the S.I. (International System of Units)

Base Quantity Unit time kilogram lenght kelvin current mol intensity 1 2 kilogram 3 lenght 4 kelvin 5 current 6 mol 7 intensity

Base Quantity Unit time second mass kilogram lenght meter temperature 1 time second 2 mass kilogram 3 lenght meter 4 temperature kelvin 5 current Ampere 6 amount of substance mol 7 intensity candela

Time: The dimension of the physical universe which, at a given place, orders the sequence of events. Mass: A quantitative measure of a body’s resistance to being accelerated. Lenght: Extension in space. Temperature: A property of an object which determines the direction of heat flow when the object is placed in thermal contact with another object (heat flows from a region of higher temperature to one of lower temperature).

Current: The net transfer of electric charge per unit time. Amount of substance: A measure of the number of particles (atom, molecules,…) present in a substance. Intensity: The power transmitted by a light wave across a unit area perpendicular to the wave

Scalar quantity Vector quantity

Scalar quantity Vector quantity time force mass velocity lenght acceleration

GROUPWORK (15 MIN part a/b/c/d 10 MIN part e)

Read the text; Make a list of all the quantities in the text; Divide the quantities you wrote in base or derived quantities; Make a list of all the words in the text concerning to the situation of a body that is not at rest;

Check the answers “How many quantities?” “ Is it a base or a derived quantity?” “ What about a body that isn’t at rest?” Do you know all the quantities or not?

e) Fill in the chart using the definitions. I Look at the yellow letters, if it will be right you’ll read…

1.The unit of mass in the S.I. 2.The unit of temperature in the S.I. 3.That influence on a body which causes it to accelerate 4.The gravitational attraction at the surface of a planet or other celestial body 5. It is a force…not to be confused with the mass 6.The unit of current in the S.I. 7.The study of the behaviour of physical system under the action of forces 8.The quantity of the most famous Einstein’s formula 9.The quantity defined as mass over volume 10.The quantity measured by a chronometer 11.The rate of decrease of speed of a motion 12.The magnitude of velocity vector
