AJANTA CAVES

Ajanta, a UNESCO world heritage site, is famous for its Buddhist rock-cut cave temples and monasteries with their extraordinary wall paintings. About 30 caves were excavated and are of two types, caityas ("sanctuaries") and viharas ("monasteries"). Although the sculpture, particularly the rich ornamentation of the caitya pillars, is noteworthy, it is the fresco-type paintings that are the chief interest of Ajanta.

ELLORA CAVES

Ellora is a site of outstanding cave temples, 20 km north of Aurangabad in the Sahyadri Hills, Maharashtra, India. The caves were excavated from volcanic rock along a 2-km stretch of west-facing embankment. There are 34 major caves, numbered consecutively rather than chronologically, starting with the Buddhist group (Caves 1-13) in the south.

THE GREAT CHOLA TEMPLES

The Great Living CholaTemples are temples built during the Chola rule in the south of India. These temples are the BrihadisvaraTemple at Thanjavur, the Temple of Gangai -kondacholisvaram and the Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram.

WESTERN GHATS

The Western Ghats constitute a mountain range along the western side of India. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the eight "hottest hotspots" of biological diversity in the world.  It is sometimes called the Great Escarpment of India.
