Good and Evil = Binary Opposites Binary: adj. consisting of, indicating, or involving two. The theory of binary opposition states that the way we understand certain words depends on our understanding of the difference between the word and its opposite. For example, on/off, hot/cold, and big/small; our understanding depends on the difference between the words and its opposing idea. Often with binary opposites like hero/coward, youth/age, and masculine/feminine, one side of the binary pair is seen by a particular society or culture as more valued than the other.
Understanding the Good vs. Evil Binary Opposition “Good and evil we know in the field of this world grow up together almost inseparably; and the knowledge of good is so involved and interwoven with the knowledge of evil, and in so many cunning resemblances hardly to be discerned”—from Areopagitica by John Milton In Chinese philosophy and religion, yin represents the negative, dark, and feminine, while yang represents the positive, bright, and masculine. The two principles interact to influence the destinies of living beings—you cannot have yin without yang, and vice versa.
