Welcome to P.S.241‘s Parent Orientation Thursday, September 22, 2016 We Dare our Teachers, Students and Parents to Succeed! Principal – Frantz Lucius, Assistant Principals – Derek Trevor Jones and Tamara Foy

During this session we will be able to inform you about: Our school’s mission, vision, and belief system D.A.R.E. belief system Expectations for students and parents Our school’s curriculum how you can assist your child at home

SCHOOL PHILOSOPHY We believe that students learn best in a collaborative, friendly and nurturing environment, which provides them with opportunities to socialize, work collaboratively, and utilize accountable talk. We believe that individual learning needs can be met through the use of multiple entry points and by implementing the principles of Universal Design. At PS 241 we believe that children learn best when they are given opportunities to be engaged in real life experiences through excursions, interviewing classmates, staff, real live authors, and relatives. Problem solving, differentiated tasks, and the use of technology for researching online are employed.

Expectations for our students All students are: required to arrive no later than 8:10 AM each school day prepared to learn and play an active role in their own learning. to be dressed on school uniform each school day. to arrive to school with homework completed and signed by you. to follow our school’s non-negotiables. to keep their hands and feet themselves at all times and to inform their teacher when they have a problem. to play an active role in class by answering questions, solving problems, and working with their classmates in a positive manner.

Our expectations for parents are: to play an active role in their child’s education by ensuring their children complete all assignments, homework, and projects in a timely manner. to ensure their children are dressed in school uniform each school day. to ensure that their children attend school each school day and on time. to check their child’s bookbag for notes and letters and respond accordingly to keep an open line of communication with the classroom teacher and to work as partners for their child’s overall success to extend learning outside the classroom - field-trips, library, museums etc

Expectations for K, 1, 2 One of our main focuses the ensure that all student learn to identify letters and decode sounds. We also want you to play an active role by going over the homework with your child and ensuring they understand that school is a place where learning and listening is important.

Our Curriculum School Wide Initiatives MOVE TO IMPROVE CODING / COMPUTER SCIENCE STANFORD HARMONY WONDERS INCREASE IN PARENT INVOLVEMENT

OUR SCHOOL’S READING INITIATIVE READING LOGS CHILDREN ARE TO READ AT LEAST 20 MINUTES DAILY. EACH CHILD NEEDS TO HAVE A LIBRARY CARD AND COMPLETE A BOOK REPORT EACH WEEK.

How you can help your child at home? Ensuring their ATTENDANCE – 100 % Discussing the importance of arriving to school on time Reviewing their homework for accuracy and neatness Taking them on field-trips to broadening their vocabulary and word view. Playing an active in our school by attending meetings, reading notices, and working with us as a team player in your child’s education. Letting us know how we can better serve you and your child.

Parents – Safety 1st PLEASE BE SURE TO UPDATE YOUR BLUE CARD INFORMATION. ARRIVE ON TIME PICK UP YOU CHILDREN -2:30 PM ONLY SEND INDIVIDUALS WHOSE NAMES ARE ON THE BLUE CARD TO PICK UP YOUR CHILD FROM SCHOOL. REVIEW THE DISCIPLINE CODE WITH YOUR CHILD. ONLINE AT SCHOOLS. NYC.GOV READ ALL NOTICES THAT ARE SENT HOME
