Real World Program Educational Travel Educational Travel (Student Travel) Real World Program 13 April 2008

Educational Travel What is it? Educational Travel provides eligible employees one round trip each 12 month period for dependents. Full-time students (under age 23) attending an undergraduate college/university or post-secondary vocational or technical school. Round trips or portions of round trips not taken in each 12-month period cannot accumulate to a subsequent period. In certain situations, Renewal Agreement Travel may be used to supplement Student Travel. With few exceptions, the child must be under 23 years of age. Exception: When the child’s basic education is delayed by military service, the age 22 limitation is extended by one additional year. - One round trip from the employee’s post per calendar year is allowed. Round trips not taken in each 12-month period cannot accumulate to a subsequent period. The first annual round trip normally originates from the overseas area. Educational travel may originate from either the school or the post. - Educational travel is available only for undergraduate students. Graduate students, even if under the age limit, are not eligible for educational travel.

Educational Travel Requirements: Sponsor must meet DSSR eligibility for living quarters allowance (LQA). Anniversary date set at first travel. “Legs” of travel must be used between anniversary dates. Expenses incurred before the child became eligible to travel cannot be reimbursed.

Educational Travel Anniversary date not interrupted if sponsor transfers from one OCONUS post to another w/o break in service. If sponsor assigned to U.S. for more than one year, date reestablished when arriving at OCONUS post. Must stay 7 consecutive days at post prior to travel back to school. Child cannot travel to post under Student Travel if sponsor transfers to U.S. or starts home leave within 30 days of child’s travel.
