What the Research Says Use low stakes writing assignments- Incorporate writing into shorter, simple tasks of recording the thinking of the student Provide multiple forms of feedback- peer responses, whole class discussions, student self reflection, and brief one on one conferences Incorporate writing for real purposes Use a variety of quality mentor texts as models for desirable “writing moves” Teach transference of skills from one type of writing to another Use rubrics, both simple and complex When possible, incorporate student choice
