Essential Question “Is this environment healthy?” Characteristics of Environmental Health (HOT TIP: look for these at Mordialloc Creek when we are kayaking and walking) Fauna What animals live in this environment? do they look healthy? What is their food source? Could their food source be contaminated by pollution? Are there many types of different animals? What about insects? What animals do you expect to see? Flora What plants are living beside the creek? Are there any plants living in the creek? Do you think the plants grew naturally or did humans put these here? Are there any introduced plants e.g. Willow trees. Water Quality What do you notice about the water quality? Is it flowing? Or Stagnant? Is it clear? Does it smell?

Characteristics of Environmental Health continued Pollutants What types of pollution do you expect to find in a storm water drain? What types of pollution do you expect to find in the bay? Where might pollution in this area come from? What can we do to minimise pollutants in this area? Water quality testing. Water pH What do you already know about pH? Why do you think it an important indicator for environmental health? Is high pH dangerous to living creatures, is low pH dangerous? Nitrates in water What are nitrates and how are they apart of our environment? why are they there and can it be dangerous to living creatures? For Homework tonight watch the 2 Videos on SLT Link and the paddling video link.
