What do you want your child to achieve this year?

Book bags (School Logo Book Bags Where Possible) Please make sure that you look in these regularly as I do use the Home/School Diary to communicate with you if not urgent. Urgent communications will be face to face or via telephone. Please ensure that your child has their school reading book and Home/ School Diary with them every day as they will be reading most days and will need to note comments and page numbers in their books, and carry out guided reading tasks in them.

Pencil Cases A list of items required in Year 4 pencil cases will be provided in the school newsletters regularly. These include several HB pencils, a rubber, pencil sharpener, 30cm ruler, a 180° protractor, several Berol blue handwriting pens, glue stick. Please name expensive items in particular, in case they are confused with someone else’s!

Pen Licence Some children already received their pen licences in Year 3, but the rest of the class will still aim to obtain their licences this year. The licence allows children to write in pen for every subject except maths. Children will receive their licence if their work is well presented and the writing is neat, joined and of regular size. Please do not provide your child with cartridge pens as they are likely to cause smudging and leakages!

P.E Kits Please make sure that your child has an indoor and outdoor P.E kit for every lesson as they are weather dependent, particularly footwear. All items (including the bag) should be named so that lost items can be returned quickly. Please provide a letter if your child is unable to take part in PE. Your child will still need to watch the lesson and carry out an activity based on it.

Homework Set on a Friday and unless otherwise stated, due in the following Wednesday. Every week children will be expected to carry out spelling practice, reading (at least 3 x per week) and times tables practice, in preparation for a spelling and maths test once a week (Thursdays). As well as this, there will be an English, maths or learning log based homework. This should take approximately 45 minutes. Please let me know if your child has struggled with the work, or did not manage to complete it in the 45 minutes in their homework books/ home, school diaries. It will be based on the topics/ lessons currently being studied. Queries about homework need to be asked before the due in date. Homework can be handed in early or in stages. A note will need to be provided if homework was unable to be carried out in exceptional circumstances.

Sample Learning Log Weekly Reading: Week commencing Fri 08.09.17 Fri 27.10.17 (hols)   Sample Learning Log

Assessment Weekly differentiated spelling and maths tests. Assessment without levels. End of term assessments to inform teacher assessments in reading, writing, maths and science. These will be explained to you at Parents’ Evenings.

Half-termly topics: Autumn 1 + 2 – The World We Live In Spring 1 + 2 – Electricity Summer 1 – The Romans Summer 2 – The Sound of Music Key Stage 2 topic plans on the school’s website.

Visits One possible visit to Verulamium Museum/ Roman topic visit to the school. Woodrow – Wednesday 18th – Friday 20th April 2018. Meeting about it to be confirmed.

First Aid First aid bag in classroom cupboard for easy access (particularly used for inhalers) If antibiotics etc need administering, we can do so at lunchtimes when a form has been completed (these are located at the office) No throat/ cough lozenges can be brought into school unless administered by the parent before school and at lunch time Head bumps and injuries during school time will be noted and sent home in your child’s book bag. An adult may call you if they feel it necessary

Lunchtimes Children will continue as in Year 3, eating first at 12.15. Junior clubs will start next week and will usually take place at 12.45 after lunch. A permission form will be sent to you regarding lunchtime football – a separate PE kit will be required Green and pink slips at lunchtime.

How You Can Help At Home… Read with your child regularly. You can take it in turns – adult modelling of reading is also important! Guidance is on the school’s website. Use the given maths support sheet with any maths homework given out Practice reciting/ answering age expected times tables Check that children have completed all homework before it is handed in Discuss important issues from news items/ research countries mentioned
