27th Sunday of Ordinary time: This week in our prayers we remember: World Mental Health Day (10th) Black History Month The Rosary

Gospel: Matthew 21: 33–43 Jesus said to the chief priests and the elders of the people, “Listen to another parable. There was a man, a landowner, who planted a vineyard; he fenced it round, dug a winepress in it and built a tower; then he leased it to tenants and went abroad. When vintage time drew near he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his produce. But the tenants seized his servants, thrashed one, killed another and stoned a third. Next he sent some more servants, this time a larger number, and they dealt with them in the same way. Finally he sent his son to them. ‘They will respect my son’, he said. But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, ‘This is the heir. Come on, let us kill him and take over his inheritance.’ So they seized him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. Now when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?” They answered, “He will bring those wretches to a wretched end and lease the vineyard to other tenants who will deliver the produce to him when the season arrives.” Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the scriptures: It was the stone rejected by the builders that became the keystone. This was the Lord’s doing and it is wonderful to see? “I tell you, then, that the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit.” Reflection: Remember times when I have felt able to welcome others, even when it has cost me in some way ... Perhaps I can recall a time, when, like the landowner, I put my heart into something, only to see it rejected. I talk about all this with the Lord who, even now, asks me to tend his vineyard. I listen to him. How do I feel? In time, I take my leave, and with thanks I end by praying, Our Father ...

Tuesday: World Mental Health Day World Mental Health Day falls on 10 October every year, with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilising efforts in support of mental health. Below are some top tips to help keep your mind healthy: Action:

Wednesday: Pope John XXIII Today is the feast day of Pope John XXIII. He became a saint on the same day as Pope John Paul II. Three members of staff from St James’ were at the Vatican for this celebration. He was instrumental in the assisting avert the Cuban missile crisis; bringing church leaders from different denominations together and reforming and updating the Church. If you were outside the church, he reminded you how much the church loved you. If you were a nonbeliever, he offered you his friendship. Prayer and Action: On the following slide is a 10 step prayer that the Pope used daily. Read through these and choose one action for today.

Wednesday: Pope John XXIII Only for today, I will seek to live the livelong day positively without wishing to solve the problems of my life all at once. Only for today, I will take the greatest care of my appearance: I will dress modestly; I will not raise my voice; I will be courteous in my behaviour; I will not criticize anyone; I will not claim to improve or to discipline anyone except myself. Only for today, I will be happy in the certainty that I was created to be happy, not only in the other world but also in this one. Only for today, I will adapt to circumstances, without requiring all circumstances to be adapted to my own wishes. Only for today, I will devote ten minutes of my time to some good reading, remembering that just as food is necessary to the life of the body, so good reading is necessary to the life of the soul. Only for today, I will do one good deed and not tell anyone about it. Only for today, I will do at least one thing I do not like doing; and if my feelings are hurt, I will make sure that no one notices. Only for today, I will make a plan for myself: I may not follow it to the letter, but I will make it. And I will be on guard against two evils: hastiness and indecision. Only for today, I will firmly believe, despite appearances, that the good providence of God cares for me as no one else who exists in this world. Only for today, I will have no fears. In particular, I will not be afraid to enjoy what is beautiful and to believe in goodness. Indeed, for twelve hours I can certainly do what might cause me consternation were I to believe I had to do it all my life.

Thursday: The Rosary October is month associated with the Rosary. The Rosary itself is an opportunity to meditate on the life of Jesus.  It is consists of 4 Mysteries (200 beads) broken down into 5 decades (10 beads) for each Mystery. On the large bead, meditate on the first mystery and pray the Our Father. Prayer cards and rosary beads are available in the chapel. If you have never prayed this beautiful prayer, perhaps this is the year to give it a try.

Friday: Thanksgiving Spend a few moments reflecting on the week: What went well? Where could you have improved? Is there anyone you need to say sorry to? Is there anyone you need to thank? Re-read the first reading from Mass last Sunday: Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-8) Prayer: Thank God for the blessings of the last week. Ask God for whatever you need for the coming week Act: Fill in a staff thank you card (located in reception), or send a card / email / text to a friend or family member that has gone above and beyond for you this week.

Remember: This month, we are collecting old clothes which will be sold to support Mary’s Meals. Please drop off clothes in the Chapel Deadline: 17th November 2017
