Environmental satisfaction in multi-tenant office buildings: A holistic approach Nienke Rovers Rianne Appel-Meulenbroek Astrid Kemperman Presentation ERES Delft, June 2017 C.J.T. (Nienke) Rovers Master thesis Eindhoven, 2016
Introduction Why is this important? Influences of economic crisis Buyers’ market arose New office concepts Sharing offices and facilities Costs & end-users’s opinion more important Environmental satisfaction more important Meeting wishes of end-users End-users have changed Characteristics of end-users Lack of holistic research
Research question How is work environment satisfaction influenced by the physical work environment and what influences do employee personality, demographic and work characteristics, and needs have on environmental satisfaction?
Research model Needs Demographic & Work characteristics Personality Physical work environment Work environment satisfaction
Approach Review of current literature Data collection & reduction Bivariate analyses (finding correlations) Path analysis (to test the complete model)
Reviewing the current literature
The work environment Features The physical characteristics of the work environment that support employees in their working activites. Facilities The extra services in the workplace that support the organization and employee’s activites. Conditions The more psychosocial aspects that follow from features and facilities.
Personal characteristics & needs Personality Big five (ten-item personality inventory was used). Demographic and work characteristics Related to the person itself and his role as employee. Needs Refer to psychological human needs. Needs differ per person.
Demographic characteristics Age Needs Gender Comfort Education level Safety Income Privacy Social interaction/contact Work hours/week Personalization Work characteristics Hours spent at office Territoriality Tenure Satus Sector of organization Affinity with nature Job status Environmental satisafaction Human scale Work activities Accessibility Type of workspace ICT Type of meeting spaces Workspace Type of office building Workplace Personality General facilities Openness to experience Hospitality facilities Emotional stability Climate conditions Conscientiousness Psychological conditions Agreeableness Extraversion Physical work environment Features Facilities Conditions Accessibility General facilities Climate ICT Hospitality facilities Psychological Workspace Workplace

What does all this mean?
Conclusion & limitations Holistic approach Helps in a more realistic insight to satisfaction Shows other relations than bivariate correlations that are found Personality, needs & offered work environment Main indicators for satisfaction
Conclusion & limitations Only offices owned by Merin One few participants of some buildings participated Single-tenant office buildings Also to compare these satisfaction scores with scores in multi tenant office buildings Larger sample, more consise questionnaire Less complex model
