UTSPA EARLY INTERNSHIP INITIATIVE

OUR MISSION Every student should leave UTS with an internship opportunity if they want one Students in M4 and S5 are at a stage of career exploration – we want to offer them more earlier A UTS education is enhanced – this is just another aspect consistent with that philosophy

Target Group While we are developing the program, target is students in M4 and S5 Why? – maturity, minimum age requirements, curiosity, pre-planning for opportunities that are available in S5 and S6 summers Greater need for resume building opportunities

When and Where 1-2 weeks (or longer) First or last week or two of summer vacation (or otherwise) Leaves balance of summer for fun/travel or other opportunities Anywhere in GTA and surrounding – if there is interest, they will go to you

Expectations of you All professions are potentially of interest THIS IS NOT FREE LABOUR – although the intern is not paid Intention is to offer an experience for the student Introduce them to what you do Talk to them about your profession Create a schedule for 1-2 weeks that will mix watching/doing/talking

Expectation of You You create the experience You supervise or delegate supervision of the student in your workplace You draft a schedule for the placement UTSPA does the rest (application/selection/communication with student and you etc.) You can choose to interview or review applications too

Insurance Often a stumbling block to participation because employer is concerned about “liability” We have general liability insurance coverage for the program to deal with these concerns

Student expectation Students will sign code of conduct Parents will sign forms Workplace privacy issues, human rights, workplace safety etc. will be reviewed Students will be given seminar on expectations before engaging All signed documentation will be exchanged with the placement

Timing All internships for summer 2018 will be finalized by mid-January Introduced through guidance program first week February Application deadline will be late February Sub-committee will facilitate interviews/make selections and notify students and placement of the match (interviews after March break/early April) UTSPA organizes various communications/meetings leading up to the placement

Are you interested? If you want to learn more or think you can host one or more students in your workplace expressions of interest can be sent to Hsava@savaassociates.com Post internship survey to be conducted to improve program
