Technical Advancements: The Cost of Progress Transport by Sea: The Titanic

Lesson Objectives: Empathise with those who survived the Titanic disaster.

The Titanic What technological problem was to blame for the sinking of the Titanic?

1. Material used Hull of the ship and the rivets: Reports that the materials used were weak and not of a high standard.

2. Manoeuvrability of the ship Due to the sub-standard rudder and speed that the ship was travelling at, the Titanic was unable to move out of the way of the ice-berg.

3. “Watertight” compartments These compartments were designed to be watertight, in fact they simply filled up with water and caused greater damage to the ship.
