YEAR 4 RESIDENTIAL to HENLEY FORT CHALLENGE, LEARN & ACHIEVE

OBJECTIVES To develop children’s self-esteem, confidence, personal and social skills when playing and learning in an unfamiliar environment Provide opportunities for children to experiences challenges that would not be possible in the classroom. Develop pupils skills; physically, mentally and socially in order to work well as a group or team Develop independence and resilience when being away from their comfort zone! Have fun, learn and have an amazing memorable experience

WHAT? WHAT IS S.O.L.D AND WHAT DO THEY DO AT HENLEY FORT? SURREY OUTDOOR LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT A RANGE OF OUTDOOR LEARNING ACTIVITIES FOR ALL AGES AND ABILITIES WHAT ACTIVITIES WILL MY CHILD BE DOING? Archery and Challenge Course Bouldering and Climbing Orienteering and Team Tasks Woodland Skills Wide Games Night Walk and Campfires

WHERE? WHERE ARE WE GOING? The centre is located on the Hog's Back high above Guildford and not only offers a wide range of centre based activities but also the chance to explore the surrounding countryside WHERE WILL MY CHILD SLEEP? Your child will be sleeping in a Yurt with 6-8 children of the same gender Each yurt sleeps between 8 and 12 people in sturdy bunk beds, has several bean bags, hanging storage, internal rope lighting and a heater for the cooler months

WHEN? WHEN DOES MY CHILD GO? Arrival Date and Time: Wed, 24 May 2017 1:00pm We will be leaving during school time in the morning and expect pupils to come to school normal time. We will inform parents of actual departure time nearer the time – so you can wave them off! WHEN DO I GET THEM BACK?!? Departure Date and Time: Fri, 26 May 2017 1:00pm We will be returning to school during school time and pupils will be dismissed in the usual way at the end of the day.

WHO? WHO IS GOING? All children in Year 4 are taking part in the residential and will be an excellent opportunity for them to gain stronger bonds together. 3 members of staff will also be there during the week Mr Kirkham will also make an appearance! WHO LEADS THE ACTIVITIES? Highly qualified instructors with relevant qualifications including first aid.

HOW? HOW DO THE CHILDREN GET THERE? Walking up to Henley Fort, through Guildford on the Wednesday morning (luggage and belongings will be transported up there). Please ensure your child has a small rucksack to walk up with, with their packed lunch in. HOW DO I STAY IN TOUCH? You don’t! The whole idea is for the children to develop independent skills and resilience when being away from home. The best way to find out what is going on is to check the school website and speak to Mr Kirkham (who will be updated regularly).

EATING?? All parents will complete a dietary requirement sheet prior to the trip to ensure the staff at Henley Fort cater for any allergies or intolerances. The children will have three meals a day; breakfast, lunch and dinner. No parent should pack extra food for their child! If your child needs an extra snack for any reasons we will ensure they are fed.

NIGHT, NIGHT SLEEP TIGHT! WHAT HAPPENS AT NIGHT TIME? Activity during the early evening Children have some time in their rooms (tidying, washing, getting ready for bed and reading) Lights out between 8-8:30pm If a child is struggling to get to sleep for genuine reasons the staff will support them and give them plenty of reassurance Staff sleep with one eye open! Children are made aware of where staff are during the night if they need help.

SAFETY FIRST All residentials are risk assessed to a high level and have to meet approval by Surrey county council. Staff on site are on call 24 hours a day in case of an emergency Teachers and Sandfield staff are all first aid trained The site itself is very secure and has perimeter fencing to protect pupils and staff Regular checks and updates are given to Mr Kirkham to indicate any safety risks.

Hygiene & Health Girls and boys have separate showering facilities. Accompanying adults will always monitor shower times. Medicines need to be clearly labelled with name and dosage and given to nominated staff member on Monday morning. Complete medical forms (two weeks prior to trip) During activities – medicines held by group leader

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES Duty Manager and First Aider on call 24 hours a day. All incidents recorded by the senior member of staff Log kept of minor accident/ incident If child involved in major accident/ incident you will be informed immediately.

EQUIPMENT/KIT LIST We will be sending a kit list letter out two weeks prior to the trip. However, to help you out to be prepared the following equipment will be needed. Please pack in a large rucksack or sports bag as they are easier to pack in the coach. Bath towel, toilet bag Night clothes Clothes, be prepared for these to come back very dirty and smelly: Socks and underwear T-shirts Sweatshirt, 1 thick and 1 thin jumper Trousers/jeans/joggers Waterproof jacket Sturdy shoes/Wellies 2 pairs of trainers (1 can be plimsolls) Large plastic bag for dirty clothes (bin bag) Book and small cuddly toy - optional

WHAT DO THEY LEAVE AT HOME? Their worries – they’ll have a great time! Any electrical device including cameras (it will be found and confiscated) – We will take lots of photos and produce a CD for a small fee Any communication device (no mobile phones, tablets etc.) Money – there is no tuck shop on site. Their family – sorry there isn’t room for you!
