Köln With its 2000 years of history, and monuments from the days of the Roman Empire through the Middles Ages until recent times, there is so much more to COLOGNE than its cathedral. This is the OLD MARKET SQUARE and MARTINSVIERTEL, with 12th century Romanesque church Groß St. Martin towering over the 14th to 17th century town houses. Over 70 percent of KÖLN was destroyed during WWII and much of the old town rebuilt, as far as possible to the original plans, but these narrow cobble-stoned alleys and picturesque Gothic buildings are some of the few that remain from the middle ages. Close to the Rhine River, what was the Fischmarkt is now an inviting mix of restaurants and pubs.
