FCS TEKS: §130.246. Counseling and Mental Health (c) Knowledge and skills. (1) The student applies mathematics, science, English language arts, and social studies in health science. The student is expected to: (C) identify societal perspectives related to mental health; TEKS: 130.246.c.1.C Principles of Human Services

Mental Illness Knowledge Check Using a red pencil and mark the box that most closely matches your thoughts/beliefs. Once you finish turn your paper over and wait for instructions.

Who/What is Society: Webster’s College Dictionary says: An organized group of persons associated together who share: activities customs class culture belief Belief: an opinion, conviction, confidence in an idea

So does that include…Me/You? So we could define society as: a group of people (Americans) who hold similar (same or really close) beliefs (opinions) on some topics (democracy, religion, standards of dress). Or we could say: a group of people (Mrs. Barber’s Class) who hold similar (same or really close) beliefs (opinions) on some topics (longer lunches & time between classes). Then WE are society. Creating meaning for students to apply concept to their own lives.

So….? How does society form commonly held beliefs? Home: “that’s just crazy uncle joe.” school, religion, television, movies, music, and books.

Even where we live Originally named the North Texas Lunatic Asylum it opened July 14, 1885. The name was changed in 1888 to North Texas Hospital for the Insane. It wasn’t until 1925 that it was changed to its current moniker: Terrell State Hospital. Optional Field Trip if schedule allows.

How society sees mental illness Movies Music Books I am Sam Crazy Train To Kill a Mockingbird Rain Man (Ozzy Osbourne) White Oleander Girl Interrupted Manic Depression Of Mice and Men Patch Adams (Jimi Hendricks) The Tell-Tale Heart Black Swan I’m Going Slightly Mad (Queen) Great Expectations What’s Eating Gilbert Grape Jane Eyre Forrest Gump Allow students time to brainstorm examples of Mental Illness portrayals in media.
