General Information Pohjankartano Lower Secondary School is located near the city centre of Oulu Pohjankartano school is part of the music centre of Oulu Madetoja hall, where the city symphony orchestra gives concerts Oulu conservatory and Madetoja music upper secondary school are all located partly in the same buildings as our school Classrooms are also used by Oulu open college (Oulu-opisto) in the evenings Karjasilta library is at our students’ disposal during the schoolday Our headmaster is Mr Ilpo Hettula Approximately 40 teachers work in Pohjankartano school Our school is under renovation and some of the classes are taught in Karjasilta school nearby

Our newly renovated hall is the centre of our school Our newly renovated hall is the centre of our school. The hall is used for various functions and also studying. The stage contains proper equipment for music performances.

Our students and different classes Pohjankartano lower secondary school has approximately 450 pupils in the grades 7-10 the pupils are 12-16 years old Half of the classes (7-9) are music classes 4-6 lessons music a week The optional 10th grade the main purpose of the 10th grade teaching is to give the pupils a possibility to enhance their skills and knowledge and thus improve their grades Preparatory class for immigrant children

Our school yard is a good place for spending the breaks. Above some 7th-graders are playing games to get to know each other at the beginning of the school year. One of our new classrooms with up-to-date teaching appliances.

Our values and curriculum Our school’s curriculum is based on the national core curriculum (http://www.oph.fi/english/curricula_and_qualifications/basic_educa tion), which has been further specified by the education authorities in the city of Oulu. Our aim is to provide every student with good basic education and a chance to be able to participate in all the school activities. The basic idea of our school is to bring the students up to be widely educated young people, who are committed to humane and ethical life values and who appreciate culture, human dignity and the individuality of every person. They are able to trust themselves, take responsibility for environment and their own lives and make sensible choices concerning their future studies.
