The Mental Anguish The Last Supper – Matthew 26:17-35; John 13 He knew that the time had come – John 13:1 He knew Judas was about to betray Him – Matthew 26:20-25 He knew that they all would forsake Him – Matthew 26:31-32 He knew Peter would deny Him 3 times – Matthew 26:33-35
The Mental Anguish The Garden of Gethsemane – Matthew 26:36-50 He feels the enormous weight of what was about to happen – Matthew 26:36-38; Mark 14:32-34; Luke 22:44 He begins having second thoughts – Matthew 26:39, 42, 44 He needs the support of His friends – Matthew 26:36-45 Judas betrays Him with a kiss – Matthew 26:47-56
The Physical Pain The Trials and Beatings – Matthew 26 - 27 His first trial is before the High Priest – Matthew 26:57-66 They spit in His face and strike Him with their fists – Matthew 26:67-68 The next day He’s tried before Pilate and then flogged – Matthew 27:1-26 The soldiers humiliate Him, and beat Him with a staff – Matthew 27:27-31
The Physical Pain The Crucifixion – Matthew 27:32-44 They made Him carry his own cross at first – John 19:16-17 They nailed Him to the cross – Matthew 27:35; Mark 15:22-25 They lifted Him up on the cross and dropped it into a hole They watch and wait for Him to die – Matthew 27:35-44
The Spiritual Despair Separation from the Father – Matthew 27:45-56 This was foretold in prophecy – Palm 22:1-2; Matthew 27:46 All alone Jesus bore the sins of the world
The Spiritual Despair The Final Punishment Have you ever wondered what Jesus did during those 3 days in the tomb? – 1 Peter 3:18-20 He suffered the full extent of punishment that we deserve! – Romans 3:23; 6:23; 2 Thessalonians 1:6-9
