7.1 The Nominating Process The 1st Step Nomination: The naming of those who seek office. Five ways nominations are made in the US: 1) Self Announcement Oldest form Person announces candidacy or write in ballot. Ex> Ross Perot (’92), Ralph Nader (’00/’04/’08), Arnold Schwarzenegger.

2) The Caucus 3) The Convention A group of like-minded people who to meet to select a candidate they will support. 7 states held them for 08 Pres Nom. 3) The Convention Party members meet to pick candidates for office.

4)Direct Primary 5)Petition Intra-party election- within the party. Closed: Only declared party members can vote. Open: Any qualified voter can take part. Blanket: Everyone on the same ballot. Runoff: The top 2 vote getters get a retry. Nonpartisan: No party labels used. (school-municipal) 5)Petition Used at local level. People sign petitions for a candidate.

Sources of Funding: Private Funding Public Funding Why? Small contrabutions, Wealthy donations, candidates, PACs, Groups, Fund Raisers, etc. $2300 Max donation. Public Funding Fed & State Treasury give subsides to campaigns. Everyone gets the same amount. Why? Believe in candidate. Want favors later

Federal Election Commission Regulate Financing Congress has the ability to watch over how money is spent! Federal Election Commission 1) Campaigns must show data 2) Limits on Contrabutions. 3) Limit funding 4) Provide public funding. Donations more than $2000 must be reported! Limit personal money.

Hard or Soft Money Hard Money- $ raised and spent to elect candidates. Soft Money- Funds given for recruitment, registration, voter drives, etc.
