My Three Favourite Photographers By Charlie

Jimmy Nelson Jimmy Nelson, born 1967, is a British photojournalist and photographer know for his portraits of tribal and indigenous people. In 2009, he started work on the project “Before they pass away”, in which he travelled around the world for 3 years photographing more than 35 indigenous tribes.

‘Before They Pass Away’ In his images, Nelson focuses on the serene and undisturbed nature of the tribes as they stand in the foreground of the vast and unique landscapes that they live in. This presents their distance from modern civilisation and in some cases their ability to live in such barren landscapes. He also takes portraits of tribe members to show their traditions through what they wear.

Ansel Adams Ansel Adams, 1902 -1984, was an American landscape photographer famous for his black and white landscape photography through the use of darkroom techniques and high contrast. He is known for his love of nature, especially Yosemite National Park which lead him to become a photographer.

Ansel Adams Images In this image, Adams uses black and white photography as well as high contrast to blend the environment together. This makes the sky stand out greatly and removes the difference between the road and the desert. In this image, taken in Yosemite, Adams presents the vast beauty of the landscape through the use of contrast between the sky and the mountains. The image is also completely desolate even though it captures such a large area.

Daniel Stier Daniel Stier is an English photographer known for various works including both portraiture and landscape pieces. I am going to focus on his piece “In My Country”. “In My Country” is a contemporary portrait of London, told through its incredibly diverse population. Taken before the Olympic games in 2012 the piece presented London as a city where 40% of the population aren't born in the UK.

In My Country The piece depicts immigrants living in London, including people from Pakistan, Poland and Ghana, as they wear traditional dress from their home country. This serves as a symbol of their cultural heritage and gives the images a timeless quality. The people pose in and around their homes, where their clothes visually confront the urban chaos of London, whilst showing cultural identity
