Thurgood Marshall Study Guide Vocabulary Authority: The right and power to lead Citizen- a person who is an official member of a community Segregation: the practice of keeping people from a different race apart. Civil Rights: the basic rights that all citizens of a country have. Justice: fair and equal treatment under law. Boycott: refusing to buy, sell or use certain goods or services as a way of protesting Important Facts Baltimore , Maryland in 1908. When he was growing up he was really good at arguing (debating). He wanted to be a lawyer. Marshall could not go to the law school he wanted to attend because he was African American. He had to travel to Washington, D.C. to get an education. Marshall did not agree with segregation. He and his partner wanted to go to the SUPREME COURT and have them decide if the law followed the Constitution. 1

Marshall worked as a lawyer for the NAACP Marshall worked as a lawyer for the NAACP. The NAACP is an organization that protects the civil rights of African Americans. Marshall helped end the segregation of many things in the United States. Ended the segregation at the University of Maryland “Brown v. The Board of Education (1954)” Helped end school segregation. Ended segregated housing, parks, beaches, swimming pools, restaurants, buses, and trains. (NOT ALL OVER USA) Nicknamed “Mr. Civil Rights” Lyndon B. Johnson chose Marshall to serve as a judge on the Supreme Court. - He was the 1st African American judge to serve on the Supreme Court. Marshall is honored by a statue in Baltimore and by a stamp.
