Objective: Scholars will demonstrate their understanding of the 5 themes of geography and use the 5 themes of geography to explain why the Democratic National Convention chose Charlotte for its 2012 location. What is the Democratic National Convention What is the Democratic National Convention? Why do you think the DNC picked Charlotte, N.C.? Activity-Digging Deeper: Use the 5 Themes of Geography to explain why Charlotte, NC is the home for the DNC for 2012. The class will be broken up into groups. Each group will write 3 or more sentences for each of the 5 themes of geography. Within in the 3 or more sentences give examples of that theme for Charlotte and how it relates to why the city was chosen for the DNC. Use your 5 themes of geography handout for guidance. To help you use the following questions: What about Charlotte’s/North Carolina’s location helped the D.N.C . choose them for this year’s convention? What about the way Charlottean’s move helped the D.N.C. choose them for them for this year’s convention? What are some of Charlotte’s unique characteristics that make it a place the D.N.C. would choose for this year’s convention? What are some common characteristics for Charlotte and it’s surrounding cities that make this an awesome region to hold this year’s D.N.C ? What are some ways that Charlotte adapts, modifies, and depends on their environments that helped the D.N.C. choose them for them for this year’s convention. Finally, the group chooses one of the 5 themes to illustrate and present to the class. The illustration must be colored and include a 1 sentence caption and a bold title at the top. Groups should be prepared to present their illustrations to the class.
