1. Engineering Design Central Concepts: Engineering design involves practical problem solving, research, development, and invention/innovation, and requires designing, drawing, building, testing, and redesigning. Students should demonstrate the ability to use the engineering design process to solve a problem or meet a challenge. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

Standard 1.1 1.1 Identify and explain the steps of the engineering design process: identify the problem, research the problem, develop possible solutions, select the best possible solution(s), construct prototypes and/or models, test and evaluate, communicate the solutions, and redesign. Identify the problem Research the problem Redesign Communicate the solutions Develop solutions Select the best solution Test and evaluate Construct a prototype Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

Write down the original problem here. Step 1 Identify the problem Write down the original problem here. Student - Design, build and program a robot to: launch the ball out by using the sound sensor and then the sonic sensor to be able to make the robot arm swing and hit the ball. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

Step 2 Research the problem Explore other options via the internet Student: List the internet sites that were helpful. Site 1http://www.nxtprograms.com/baseball_batter/index.html Site 2http://www.nxtprograms.com/index1.html Site 3http://www.nxtprograms.com/pitcher_and_batter/index.html What did you learn from your research? A I learned how to use the sound sensor B I learned how to work with the sonic sensor C I learned how to use time management Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

Step 3 Develop solutions BRAINSTORM COLLABORATION Student : Share your ideas with your design team. List your ideas below. I said that we should use the whole pitch and batter design Adjust the angle of the sonic head to see the ball better Mess with the program until we got it to work Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

Student: Describe which solution(s) best meet the need or Step 4 Select the best Possible solution(s) Student: Describe which solution(s) best meet the need or solve the problem. Describe exactly what idea or mixture of ideas your design team decided on for the first robot prototype? Use the next slide for your response. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

The Somerset Berkley writing rubric will be used for assessment. Student : Skillfully and imaginatively describe what your first prototype will look like. Our robot has a mechanism connected by the wires that has two arms and tires on so when you clap the tires spin and then launch the ball. When the ball is launched there is a sonic sensor that reads the ball coming toward it and then tells the robot arm to swing and hit the ball.

Build a robot with your NXT lego kit Step 5 Construct a prototype Build a robot with your NXT lego kit Create a computer program for your robot. Use the next slide(s) for the digital pictures of your prototypes and computer programs. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

Step 5 evidence 1st Prototype picture and computer program

Step 6 Test and Evaluate the solution(s) Does your robot work?yes Did it perform as expected?yes What changes are necessary for the robot and the program?nothing Does it meet the original design constraints?yes Is it safe?yes Lab work- Modify your robot project and use the next slide to post a picture of your improved robot project. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

Step 6 evidence 1st modified prototype picture and computer program

Step 6 evidence 2nd modified prototype picture and computer program

3rd modified prototype picture and computer program Add additional slides as necessary

Communicate the solution(s) Step 7 Communicate the solution(s) Provide the YouTube link of your video that shows how your robot meets the challenge. YouTube video link : Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

Overhaul the solution(s) based on information gathered Redesign Overhaul the solution(s) based on information gathered during testing and self-assessment activity. Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006
