Understanding your own Philosophy of Teaching “No classroom management technique can be more effective than a teacher who knows why he or she is standing up there”. - Dominic Belmonte

Belmonte’s Tenets Which of the 15 tenets resonated with you? Are there any that you do not fit your beliefs? How important do you think it is to have a core set of beliefs? What are your beliefs?

What is a philosophy of teaching? Narrative of what you believe to be the nature and purpose of: Schooling / Education Students Teachers Your classroom

Schooling / Education Big Questions What is the purpose of schools / education? Citizenship, vocation, life-skills, etc… What is the purpose of your content area?

Students Big Questions What are your beliefs regarding students? Can all students learn? Do they need to be motivated? Do students of different genders, races, or circumstances have different need? Should they be taught differently? How much input in the learning process should students have?

Teachers Big Questions What is the role of a teacher? Guide, coach, facilitator, lecturer, etc… What are characteristics of a good teacher? How should teachers interact with students? How should teachers grow professionally?

Your Classroom Big Questions (these should connect with the previous slides) What will your classroom look like? How will it function? What methods will you use. How will learning take place? How will you gauge learning?
