Do Now Copy the HW: WHIL due Friday (extra copies on back table) Open your textbook to page 74 and copy the definitions for: Pharaoh Dynasty Absolute power

Vocab Pharaoh The title of the kings of ancient Egypt

Vocab Dynasty A series of rulers from the same family or ethnic group

Vocab Absolute power Complete control over someone or something

Activity: The Power of the Pharaohs You are going to write a speech, as Menes, for the monument. In your speech, you need to discuss: How you started Egypt’s first dynasty The type of power you hold How you make decisions How laws were made Why you are called a god-king Your power over the Nile and yearly harvests Independently, read about the rulers of Egypt from page 75 – top of 76. Then, you are going to put yourself in the mind of the first pharaoh of Egypt, Menes. You want a monument made about your accomplishments.

King Menes’ Speech! How you started Egypt’s first dynasty I united the two areas of Egypt called Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt into one large kingdom. The type of power you hold As pharaoh, I have absolute power over all the people of Egypt! I have complete control! How you make decisions Although only the pharaoh makes decisions, I usually ask my advisors for advice, or I pray to Ma’at, the goddess of truth.

King Menes’ Speech! How laws were made Why you are called a god-king Whatever I decide can become a law! Why you are called a god-king I am the earthly form of Horus, the falcon god. I am both a god and a king! Your power over the Nile and yearly harvests Since I am a god, I control the flooding of the Nile River each year and the harvests that follow. Without me, those would not happen!

4 corners One person should be allowed to create laws for an entire society.
