Room 5 October Newsletter Happy October! We have had an excellent first month in school! Here is the latest… Homework- Please remember that homework goes home on Monday and is returned on Friday morning. There has been some confusion with a homework folder. I do not provide one. The Dragon Folder is the school communication folder and comes and goes on a different schedule, please do not use it as a homework folder. Dragon Folders Speaking of which, please remember to look at the contents of the Dragon Folder on Friday nights. This is a time for you to sit with your student and review work sent home. Please empty the contents and send only the folder back on Monday mornings. Math Lab- Math Lab is ON! Thank you to all of the parents who have signed-up! We will see you next Friday. H3 and Kid Power This month we are practicing “Honesty”. Please emphasize this important character trait at home. We have also been practicing our “Positive Powers”. Be sure to ask your little ones about Clam Down and Mouth Closed Power! Birthdays- Happy Birthday to all of my September babies: Aahana, Emmanuel, and Vishak! Materials List/School Supplies As mentioned at BSN, I have attached the materials list for art and science materials used in the class. Some of these materials will be shared with our science teacher, Mrs. Varma. Please consider a donation. I’ve tried to make it easy by assigning the type of gift card by your student’s classroom number (cubby number). See back. Thanks to all who have sent a card. YAY! Caring Kitty We started a donation jar for the various charity fundraisers at school. It all started with our third grade accepting donation for hurricane relief. That got me thinking about the other charities that happed through out the year. Why not donate spare change all year so that we can donate to all of the charities? This teaches the children about giving and compassion, as well as, a bevy of math. So, the money started coming in and we started a jar, Caring Kitty! Some of the kids spent time sorting coins and bills, tallying, and I added to totals. We collected $45.09. Then we talked about donating and saving money for later in the year. The children decided to donate $10.00 to hurricane relief, and $10.00 to earthquake relief in Mexico, via the Red Cross. If you can, please send your child with a penny or so to add to the kitty. I love it because I get to rid myself of my spare change too! Future charities will include the annual Pennies for Patients and St. Jude’s Hospital drives. Teacher Tip: Penmanship Penmanship is an important part of first grade. We practice everyday. Young children are still learning when to use capital letters and lowercase letters. When working with your child, please look at what kind of letters are being used. More specifically, stand alone words are NOT capitalized, unless the word is a proper noun. If you see your child using a capital letter incorrectly, please gently correct. Letter reversals in the first grade are common and normal. Again, if you see reversed letters or numbers, just point it out and have the child correct. If reversals persist in second or third grade, something else might be happening. Please do not be alarmed! In the first grade, I use primary lined newsprint as much as I can. This paper helps children to make proper letters. You will see a lot of it coming home. We also use special notebooks in class that have primary lines. If you can, please use it at home. The Dollar Tree has pads. Thank you for your time and attention. Miss Imburgia (Chaos Coordinator)

Art and Science Materials List Room 5 The students in Room 5 use the following materials for various art and science projects throughout the year. Some of the materials are also used by our science teacher for lab experiments. I am asking for donations of $10.00 gift cards to Walmart, Dollar Tree, Amazon, and Michaels to help offset our expenses. To make it easy, I have assigned the type of card to your child’s student number, or cubby number. Please know that donations are completely voluntary. Additionally, I also use a lot of recyclable items. Please keep toilet tissue/paper towel rods, cleaned/label free glass jars, cleaned paper milk cartons, magazines, cereal boxes, and plastic berry baskets out of the garbage and in the classroom! If you choose to donate a card to the classroom, purchase a card according to your child’s student (cubby) number. Students 1-6 Walmart, Students 7-12 Dollar Tree, Students 13-18 Michael’s, and Students 19-24 Amazon. I keep all receipts for purchases, and anyone is welcome to view them at anytime.
