Online education – the future of education Dimitrije Milojević, ma, lect.

Types of education Education Regular education Online education

Timeline of online education Distance learning is not the same as online learning! Regular education (f2f) Education with the help of ICT Hybrid (blended) education Online education E- learning Online education Distance learning E-learning Distance learning

Types of education and usage of technology Form Description Technology Regular education Classroom based education N/A Education with the help of ICT Technology is used for improvement of education PowerPoint, CD, DVD, e-mail, forum… Hybrid (blended) education Combination of synchronous and asynchronous communication LMS (Learning Management System) Online education Exclusively online education

Online education The phenomenal growth of online education is presenting UNCHARTED CHALLENGES for academic institutions. Virtual learning environment can also include students and teachers “meetings” online through synchronous web-based applications. The teacher is able to present lesions through video, PowerPoint, or chatting. The students are able to talk with other students and the teacher, as well as collaborate with each other, answer questions, or pose questions.

Types of online education Free Vs. Cost Academic Vs. non academic Youth Vs. Adult Business Vs. Personal development Vs. Lifelong learning

Synchronous vs asynchronous learning systems Virtual learning can take place synchronously and asynchronously In Synchronous systems, participants meet in “real time”, and teachers conduct live classes in virtual classroms. Students can communicate through a microphone, chat rooms, or by writing on board. In asynchronous learning, which is sometimes called “self-paced” learning, students are expected to complete lessions and assingments independently through the system. Asynchronous courses have deadlines just as synchronous courses do, but each student is learning at his own pace.

terminology - Regular education– “Classroom education” (f2f ili face-to-face), - ICT based education – ICT supported teaching and learning. - Blended (mixed learning) (50:50, 75:25…) - 100% online and asynchronous educational process Distance learning - implies all forms of teaching and learning where students and mentors are geographically separated online distance learning - refers to a particularly online environment where teaching and learning takes place with the help of computers as a communication medium

terminology LMS (Learning Management System): software application for the administration, documentation, tracking, reporting and delivery of educational courses or training programs VLE – Virtual Learning Environment – synonym for LMS MOOC (Massive open online course) - a course of study made available over the Internet without charge to a very large number of people.

Advantages of E-learning & technology Choice Flexibility Networking opportunities Pacing Open Scheduling Savings Connections Teaching & testing options Effectiveness

Benefits of online education over regular education Sitting at home and getting knowledge Getting knowledge at particular location Less expensive Bit costlier Missed classes can be gained at any time Missed classes are hard to gain No timings Specific timing Can get more explanations Less explanations Variety of programs and courses Less programs and courses

Benefits of regular education over online education Face to face communication No face to face communication Doubts and extra questions can be asked easily Bit difficult to solve doubts and extra questions Students can interact with other students Students are sometimes left on themselves

Negative sides of online education Feeling isolated and Loss of the group experience – main reason for drop-out of students (solution: online group work applications) Demands on students - Online learning requires increased time-management skills and focus, and less dependence from learner Quality questioned – old school lecturers don't take their online lesson preparations as seriously as they could (solution: regulatory and accreditation minimal requirements)

Academic integrity questioned – cheating - Solution 1: policy of academic integrity: faculties that have a policy of academic integrity have 25 - 50% less academic discontent than faculties without a policy of academic integrity (Center for Academic Intergity, 2002.) Some authors recommended that students sign a non-cheat contract Solution 2: collaborative learning student interaction: (a) with other students, (b) with mentor / teacher and (c) with a technological medium (student-online interactive information and communication system) contributes to collaborative learning and thus reduces academic disrespect in online education environment.

Academic integrity questioned – cheating Solution 3: modification of online tasks project based tasks Solution 4: controlled environment The TeSLA project strives to develop a trust-based system for authentication and authorship of e-assessment in online and blended learning environments. It combines different innovative technologies to authenticate and ensure authorship of students such as facial recognition, voice recognition, typing patterns or anti-plagiarism. http://tesla-project.eu/
