Online education The phenomenal growth of online education is presenting UNCHARTED CHALLENGES for academic institutions. Virtual learning environment can also include students and teachers “meetings” online through synchronous web-based applications. The teacher is able to present lesions through video, PowerPoint, or chatting. The students are able to talk with other students and the teacher, as well as collaborate with each other, answer questions, or pose questions.

Synchronous vs asynchronous learning systems Virtual learning can take place synchronously and asynchronously In Synchronous systems, participants meet in “real time”, and teachers conduct live classes in virtual classroms. Students can communicate through a microphone, chat rooms, or by writing on board. In asynchronous learning, which is sometimes called “self-paced” learning, students are expected to complete lessions and assingments independently through the system. Asynchronous courses have deadlines just as synchronous courses do, but each student is learning at his own pace.

Negative sides of online education Feeling isolated and Loss of the group experience – main reason for drop-out of students (solution: online group work applications) Demands on students - Online learning requires increased time-management skills and focus, and less dependence from learner Quality questioned – old school lecturers don't take their online lesson preparations as seriously as they could (solution: regulatory and accreditation minimal requirements)

Academic integrity questioned – cheating - Solution 1: policy of academic integrity: faculties that have a policy of academic integrity have 25 - 50% less academic discontent than faculties without a policy of academic integrity (Center for Academic Intergity, 2002.) Some authors recommended that students sign a non-cheat contract Solution 2: collaborative learning student interaction: (a) with other students, (b) with mentor / teacher and (c) with a technological medium (student-online interactive information and communication system) contributes to collaborative learning and thus reduces academic disrespect in online education environment.

Academic integrity questioned – cheating Solution 3: modification of online tasks project based tasks Solution 4: controlled environment The TeSLA project strives to develop a trust-based system for authentication and authorship of e-assessment in online and blended learning environments.
