Types of government

Authoritarian Root word- authority Govt. controls all aspects of citizens economic and social lives. Examples – Nazi Germany (Hitler), Joseph Stalin ( Soviet Union).

Authoritarian continued Some claim to have elections- only one person running, rest of candidates are threatened. Dictator- 1 person with total control. Root word- dictate. Oligarchy- same except for owned by a group. Example- Soviet Union under communism.

Monarchy Government ran by a king or queen who has inherited their power. Originated in ancient times with religious figures being placed in power. Constitutional monarchy- king or queen have limited power, and there is some elected officials that also have power and run the govt. Examples- G.B., Sweden, Japan, Netherlands.

Democracy Govt. where rule is by the people. Democracy started in Greece. 2 types of democracy- direct or representative. Direct democracy- everyone has an equal say and vote on all government issues. Representative- citizens elect officials to make and vote on govt. issues for them.

Discussuion Pros and cons of Direct democracy? Pros and cons of Representative democracy?

Economics of government 3 factors of production for every single economy no matter the type of government. producers- people who make goods and services to sell. Distributors- people who get products to buyers. Consumers- people who purchase and use goods and services. *discuss examples of producers and distributors.

Capitalism Private ownership of factors of production. What does this mean? In pure capitalism government does not interfere with the economy, the wages of workers, the price of goods, what producers make, and other regulations. Free market- no limits on freedom of buyers or sellers in regards to economic decisions.

Laissez-faire Adam Smith, French economist in the 1700’s, wrote a book “The Wealth of Nations”. Laissez-faire means “to let alone”. Smith thought the marketplace should guide the economy and not the other way around. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejJRhn53X2M

Socialism a political and economic theory of social organization that advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQKY79pyPXM

Socialism cont. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4tIhHHvzNA pro socialism anti capitalism. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKhR9i5CGkA pro capitalism anti socialism.

The U.S. is a mixed Govt. The U.S. has both capitalistic and socialist characteristics. The U.S. is more Capitalistic than socialist economically, but this trend has changed as the country has grown. The Federal government itself is bigger than all other consumers of food and goods combined. Discuss socialist attributes of Federal government.

Socialist attributes FDA, Income tax Social security Welfare Food stamps Low income health care Business bail outs

bailouts https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GT1WqIkg9es Auto anti bailout https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGFY6Rg2uMg Pro bailout https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OACGoyOCSc

Communism Otherwise called a command economy. Command economy- decisions are made at the upper levels of government and handed down to the rest of the nation. German philosopher Karl Marx is the founding father of communism. Felt that industrialization was a negative and thought that workers would revolt against capitalism.

Marxism What Karl Marx wanted from communism- True equality, equal gender roles, education access, and health care. Was a major advocate and god father of worker’s unions. Almost impossible to have personal debt. Most importantly, everyone works together for the common good.

Negatives of Marxism/communism There is absolutely no private ownership. The government owns everything together. You do not own your home nor do you get to choose where you live or what you do for a living. There is absolutely no entrepreneurship or private business ownership. No opening a diner, or store or business of any kind. There is no more religion- you can think what you want but cannot practice any type of religion due to the possibly giving you power as a group over others.

Effects of Marxism Marxism led to the communist government of Stalin and the Soviet Union. Since the govermnent had 100% control over the country and owned everything, corruption followed. During Stalin’s reign and under his form of communism, an estimated 800,000 people were executed for political crimes.

Communism effects continued Gulags- the Russian name for prison labor camps. An estimated 2 million political and petty criminals were killed in these camps under Stalin. Involuntary resettlement- where people of unfavorable nationalities were forced to move to remote areas that lacked supplies and food. estimated 1 million perished.

Estimated deaths under communism Estimated in the book “The Black Book of Communism by Stephane Courtois. 65 million in the People's Republic of China 20 million in the Soviet Union 2 million in Cambodia 2 million in North Korea 1.7 million in Ethiopia 1.5 million in Afghanistan 1 million in the Eastern Bloc 1 million in Vietnam 150,000 in Latin America
