Rhythm & Blues (R&B)

Became popular in America Genre combined with jazz, gospel, and blues.(late 1940’s-early 1950’s) This genre was first performed by African-American artists. In 1948, RCA Victor was marketing black music under the name Blues and Rhythm. The words were reversed by Wexler of Atlantic Records, the most aggressive and dominant label in the R&B field in the early years. R&B was being used as a blanket term to describe soul and funk. Rhythm and blues originated from the sociological, industrial, and technological changes that took place in the United States just prior to and during World War II (1939-1945).

R&B Fashion Most R&B fashion trends during the 80’s and 90’s were suites, dresses, and for the shoes the women wore heals and the men usually wore British walkers.

R&B Timeline 1938- the band Tympany Five was formed. January 1965- Temptations first number one hit “My Girl” 1965- The album Diana Ross Presents the Jackson Five came out. 1990- Mariah Carey’s self titled debut album was released. 2001- Alicia Keys debut album was released. 2009- 50th Anniversary of Motown.
