UMI-Sci-Ed Exploiting Ubiquitous Computing, Mobile Computing and the Internet of Things to promote Science Education e- Twinning: Learning to Think in A Digital Society Workshop 10 29-09-2017 “UMI-Sci Ed: Ιntroduction on Communities of Practice Αctions” Senior Researcher, Research Associate of Research Unit 3, Computer Technology Institute & Press "Diophantus“, in Communities of Practice : Dr Olga Fragou ( fragou@cti.gr)

Knowledge Management and Open and Distance Learning (ODL) PROBLEMS IN WORK PRODUCTS It is connected with the provision of organization, design, motivation, supervision in an organization’s systems, processes, and staff Documents Artifacts Repositories of good practice Knowledge (individual level) Knowledge (collaborative level) Μethodologies System characteristics PEOPLE ORGANISATION TECHNOLOGY PROCESSES RELATIONSHIPS

What shapes a Community of Practice (CoP) practice/work open competence constant work triggered individual working identity sustainable “ an environment on which the members have already set their rules, their models of ethics, the accepted behavior and thus shape a relationship of trust , sharing and respect” ( Wenger, 2002)

Characteristics of Community of Practice concepts actions tools artifacts communication narratives

Goals of UMI-Sci-Ed CoPs UMI-Sci-Ed Communities of Practice (CoPs): are formed dynamically around UMI projects implemented at schools, including representatives of all necessary stakeholders. focus on developing a fully integrated training environment for 14- 16 years old students based on a selection of methodological processes and UMI applications. Involve an open repository of educational material, training activities, a platform to support CoPs through socialization, educational material, entrepreneurship training, showcases, self-evaluation, mentoring, and conceptualisation of content and information management.

Methodology of building UMI-Sci-Ed CoPs

UMI-Sci-Ed CoPs preliminary activities Y1 Definition of research sample - Selection of participating schools, definition of involvement protocol (e.g. application form, ethics procedure), specification of numbers of participating students and teachers. Composition of schedule - Specification of a work plan for the design, execution and evaluation of pilot studies with activities assigned to stakeholders taking into account local constraints (e.g. acceptable duration of a pilot study in every country) Specification of infrastructure for developing the UMI-Sci-Ed scenarios - Design and authoring of training materials having in mind the students’ idiosyncrasies (e.g. technological and educational profile), composition of technologies employed in the pilot studies over Arduino and communities of practice.

UMI-Sci-Ed Initial Educational Material

UMI-Sci-Ed ES : Knowledge, Skills, Attitudes The structure of computer based sensoring system The practice of scientific research Fundamental features of IoT (sensing, connectivity etc) Simple enabling technologies SKILLS Programming skills Data collection skills Data analysis skills Hardware skills Project management skills Scientific thinking skills IoT programming &web publishing 21st century skills Building UMI prototypes Design methods & flexible thinking Understanding STEM competencies to design solutions Research & understanding a societal problem Leadership skills Creative problem solving ATTITUDES Hidden energy consumption & relation to climate change Bring together scientific consumption & data acquisition Easiness in programming IoT applications to produce automated machines Design thinking Creative thinking Social challenges awareness Educational engagement Entrepreneurship Usability Collaboration Communication of concepts Critical analysis and reflections

Media STEM Education Educational Scenarios UDOO Neo is a Raspberry Pi and Arduino compatible, credit-card sized board for Internet of Things (IoT) projects. It provides built in Wi-Fi, BlueTooth 4.0 functionality and bares a number of embedded sensors. It supports, Android, GNU/Linux and Arduino™. UMI-Sci-Ed: small scale pilot research Small scale pilot research (1st pilot phase - year 2): Developing UMI-Sci-Ed scenarios using technological material and scenarios. Small scale pilot research, so as a) to enable improvement of technology and tools b) to initiate appropriate training to people involved. The involved actions include: ● Focus on knowledge, skills, attitudes ● Prepare appropriate technological material ● Establish infrastructure for communication and collaboration on CoPs ● Conduct small scale pilot research (1 school) ● Amendments and improvement of tools and technology ● Training process
