THE ROAD TO EMMAUS Ruth & Samuel

List in order the backbone books QUIZ List in order the backbone books of the OT chronology

The backbone books are on the far left column.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT Ruth 1:1 In the days when the judges ruled there was a famine in the land, and a man of Bethlehem in Judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he and his wife and his two sons. Map of the southern Levant, c. 830s BC.

THEME Yahweh is raising up His king to keep the covenant and redeem His people, despite the apparent circumstances which suggest that Yahweh has forgotten His people.

ROMANTIC ENDING Ruth 4:18-22 Now these are the generations of Perez: Perez fathered Hezron, Hezron fathered Ram, Ram fathered Amminadab, Amminadab fathered Nahshon, Nahshon fathered Salmon, Salmon fathered Boaz, Boaz fathered Obed, Obed fathered Jesse, and Jesse fathered David.

LEVIRITE MARRIAGE

THEME Yahweh will rule over His people through the king whom He chooses. This king must keep the covenant and obey the word of Yahweh in order to be a good shepherd to the people.

SAUL: A KING IN GOD’S PLACE 1 Sam 8:7 And the LORD said to Samuel, “Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them.”

SAUL: A KING IN GOD’S PLACE 1 Sam 8:18 And in that day you will cry out because of your king, whom you have chosen for yourselves, but the LORD will not answer you in that day. 1 Sam 8:19-20 But the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel. And they said, "No! But there shall be a king over us, that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles."

SAUL: A KING IN GOD’S PLACE 1 Sam 9:16 Tomorrow about this time I will send to you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince over my people Israel. He shall save my people from the hand of the Philistines. For I have seen my people, because their cry has come to me.

SAUL: A KING IN GOD’S PLACE 1 Sam 13:13-14 And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the command of the LORD your God, with which he commanded you. For then the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. But now your kingdom shall not continue. The LORD has sought out a man after his own heart, and the LORD has commanded him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded you.”

DAVID: A MAN AFTER GOD’S HEART 1 Sam 16:1 The LORD said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.” v. 7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.” v. 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David from that day forward.

DAVID: A MAN AFTER GOD’S HEART 2 Sam 7:1-3 Now when the king lived in his house and the LORD had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies, the king said to Nathan the prophet, "See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent." And Nathan said to the king, "Go, do all that is in your heart, for the LORD is with you."

DAVID: A MAN AFTER GOD’S HEART 2 Sam 7:11 From the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the LORD declares to you that the LORD will make you a house [dynasty]. v. 12 When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. v. 13 He shall build a house [temple] for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

DAVID: A TYPE OF CHRIST Heb 3:6 Christ is faithful over God's house as a son. And we are his house if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope. 2 Sam 7:14-15 I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you.
