4.3, 4.4 & 4.5 You will produce a leaflet/poster/illustrated document that covers all three of the above elements. Your leaflet must be: Colourful and illustrated; Spell checked and proof-read; In your own words. Be sure to pay attention to the key word for each task (identify, describe, state).

ACTIVITY 1 An aircraft cabin is a far from ideal a place to be carrying out first aid. Make a spider chart identifying as many different restrictions for crew that you can think of. 6 and under: okay 7 to 10: good 11+: Excellent

RESTRICTIONS Restrictions include: Lack of space; Limited equipment; Other people present; Panicking family; Hygiene; Lack of training; Cabin Environment; Time; Crew tiredness; No doctors present.

FIRST AID KITS There are three different types of first aid kit (FAK) used onboard: Doctors Box; Regular First Aid kit; SCA First Aid kit.

DOCTORS BOX This is kept in the flight deck and includes a number of items that can only be given by a doctor and/or on the advice of Medlink: Injections; Prescription medicine; Emergency equipment; Saline solution; Medical instruments.

REGULAR FIRST AID KIT There are usually at least a couple of these onboard and they contain everyday medication and sundry equipment that staff can dispense: Tablets; Bandages; Minor first aid products; Hygiene kits.

SCA FIRST AID KIT These are carried by all SCA’s and are to be used instead of the regular first aid kits if everyday items are required. Tampons; Tablets; Dressings; Smelling salts; Basic components.

PROCEDURES Each of the different types of kits have their own procedures with regard to their use. Sealed: Red (not enough left) Orange (used but enough) Green (full and unopened)

DOCTORS BOX Kept in flight deck; Can only be opened on advice of Medlink; Must ask for captains permission; Record what has been taken; Invasive: crew can’t do; Some items only used by doctors onboard - ID; Must be sealed afterwards; Pax details must be recorded on medlink form and flight report.

REGULAR FIRST AID KIT Only opened if SCA says so; Must ask for captains permission to open; Record what has been taken; Read usage instructions to pax. Must be sealed afterwards; Pax details must be recorded on flight report.

SCA FIRST AID KIT Only opened if SCA says so; Read usage instructions to pax; Pax details must be recorded on flight report; Replenished at base.

ASSISTANCE Cabin crew have to think on their feet at work and use all available resources when a first aid situation arises. Crew do however have the option to request assistance from others onboard or on the ground. Can you think of anyone?

ACTIVITY 4 In your groups identify who is available to help on the ground and who can help in the air if there is a first aid emergency.

ONBOARD Onboard, crew are limited to the amount of assistance that they can expect from medical personnel. However there are a few sources that crew may be able to rely on in an emergency: Medlink; Professional medical assistance; Armed Forces.

MEDLINK Airlines pay a company called Medlink for medical advice whilst in flight. Phoenix, AZ; Helpline manned 24hrs by clinical doctor; Contact them using satellite phone: Relay pax info (signs, symptoms & history); Doctor gives advice about treatment; Doctor also gives permission to open doctors box.

MEDICAL STAFF People that work in the healthcare industry can often be found on flights. If medical assistance is needed crew can make an announcement. Needs to be a clinical doctor or GP for invasive treatment; Must see staff ID showing position & employer; Will be insured by the airline; Write their details on FR.

FORCES People that work in the armed forces may have experience of basic first aid and crowd control and may be called upon to assist. Needs to be supervised, could be used for crowd control more than medical help;

ON THE GROUND On the ground, crew are limited to the amount of assistance that they can expect from medical personnel. Ambulance; Paramedic; Port Health; First Aid Room.

AMBULANCES These can be rung-up by Medlink or the pilot and requested for arrival to take the pax to hospital. Cardiac Ambulance: Life threatening issues like stroke, DVT, heart attack and epileptic fit victims; Paramedic: Non-life threatening conditions.

PORT HEALTH If an aircraft lands with a passenger (or number of pax) displaying certain, highly contagious virus/flu like symptoms, then Port Health will meet the aircraft: Everyone to remain onboard; Port Health assess situation; Pax can be quarantined; If ok, all pax and crew are free to leave.

FIRST AID ROOM Many airports have a first aid room or facility where pax or staff can go to lay down or be treated for minor injuries and ailments. Usually unmanned; Basic facilities.

ACTIVITY 5 On your worksheet, match up each assistance source with the correct comments.
