Traditional vs. Modern Warfare

I. Traditional Warfare 1. Avoid major battles unless certain of victory. 2. Out-maneuver the enemy. 3. Capture the enemy’s capital. 4. Leave civilians alone.

II. Modern Warfare 1. Totally destroy the enemy- do whatever it takes. 2. Fight aggressively and pursue (chase) the enemy down. 3. Don’t worry about hurting civilians – it’s too bad if they get in the way. 4. Burn down towns, take food, and destroy railroads, cities, etc.

III. Lincoln Wages Modern War 1. In the Spring of 1864, Lincoln finds a general who understands and is willing to wage modern war- Ulysses S. Grant.

IV. Grant Promotes Two Like- Minded Generals William Tecumseh Sherman Phillip Sheriden

V. Civil War Generals Ulysses S. Grant Union General (North) Robert E. Lee Confederate General (South)

VI. Effects of Modern Warfare 1. The destruction of towns such as Atlanta, GA 2. Sherman’s “bow ties”

VII. Reasons for Increased Civil War Casualties 1. Modern weapons versus outdated tactics

Canon “grapeshot”

The Minie Ball

Disease 3. The lack of medical knowledge contributed to the high number of deaths. Disease killed many more men than combat did.

More Americans died in the Civil War than in all other American wars combined. Union Confederacy Died in battle 140,000 75,000 Died from disease 220,000 90,000 Total losses 360,000 165,000
