Safe People – Safe Places

Quick Quiz Working with a partner, try to answer the Quick Quiz questions on your table. You have 5 minutes to discuss and record your answers.

The Facts Up to 100,000 children run away from home every year. A child runs away from home every 5 minutes. 95% of children do not seek help while they are away from home. The average age of child runaways is 13. 1 in 6 will sleep rough with a stranger.

Learning Objectives Appreciate the reasons children and young people run away from home. Identify the risks associated with running away. Determine how to reduce risks by identifying safe people and safe places.

Group Discussion In groups, discuss what we mean by ‘running away’. When you are in agreement, write your definition on the paper provided and stick it on your classroom wall.

Case Study Carousel Positioned around the room are 6 different case-studies. In pairs or small groups read each one and decide the following: Why has the child or young person run away? What are the potential risks of their actions? Does this meet your definition of running away?
