Create a unified, 3 part painting of a subject of your choice Painting Triptych Create a unified, 3 part painting of a subject of your choice

Historically, artists created a triptych (a painting made on 3 panels) by painting on two side panels that closed like doors over a central painting. Often they were religious in nature.

Today, artists continue to use this traditional three-part structure, although contemporary paintings usually have three panels side by side rather than side panels that open and close.

Think of a composition suited to a 3-panel format: After looking at some modern and historical triptychs, think about how different artists divide his or her compositions among the 3 panels? Think of a composition suited to a 3-panel format: Scene or setup from 3 different views, 3 styles, or 3 times of day or year Reflect a sequence; something before, during, or after a particular event.

Creating your triptych Select a subject for your painting. - draw a pencil sketch for each panel - decide whether each panel will be the same size or if the central panel will be more prominent - think about how to create a sense of unity across the three panels.

These triptychs are too simple, not enough detail for this assignment!

Requirements 3 panels Well executed sketches: thoughtful, thorough, independent Minimum of 11 x 14 inches with ¼ inch boarder ( 10.5 x 13.5) Compositions: Achieve strong unity across all three panels; variety also effectively used to create compelling interest in each work. Integrated, balanced, compelling. Subject matter appropriately challenging Detail work and color mixing and blending. Sophisticated control and use of the media, good craftsmanship.
