Let’s make OUR SCHOOLS BULLY-FREE Schools! By: Tommy Sheppard, M.Ed (counselling)

What is Bullying???? Behavior that is intentional, hurtful and repeated by one or more persons!

Conflict VERSUS Bullying Can you tell the difference? Disagreements? Equal Power? Poor Choices - Name calling? One Time - not repeated? Not Targeted? Targeted? Imbalance of Power - one sided? Repeated? Fear?

Two Types of Bullying! Direct and Indirect DIRECT Physical - hitting, kicking, pushing, stealing, hiding, or ruining someone’s things. Making someone do something they don’t want to do.! Verbal - Name calling, teasing, insulting, threats!

INDIRECT Relationship Bullying - gossiping, spreading rumors and lies about someone. Making someone feel left out or rejected.

Cyber Bullying Can be Direct or Indirect!

Bystanders! Bystanders are those who watch bullying happen or hear about it! Can you spot the bystanders in the pictures below?

So How Do We Stop Bullying? Treat everyone with respect and kindness Refuse to bully others and refuse to let others be bullied Encourage other bystanders to help stop the bullying incident by being assertive. Make friends with someone who continually gets picked on Report it or send someone to a trusted adult

Remember, Do Not Be a BYSTANDER! Refuse to watch, laugh, or join in when someone is bullied! Say, “That’s not funny!” “How would you like it if someone did that to you?” “That’s not showing good character.”! “Please stop, that’s not cool.”!
