Creating a New IDC Research Template in Word 2007 When you create a new research document in Word 2007, you need to base the new document off the new Template. There are two ways to do this: Choose Start-->Programs-->IDC Templates-->Create New IDC Research Document (07). NOTE: The "(07)" at the end of the name indicates it is for Office 2007

Creating a New IDC Research Template in Word 2007 (Continued) Start MS Word 2007, Click the Office Button and choose New. Click "My Templates..." in the left column. Choose the "IDC Research.dotm" icon, and click the "OK" button The next time you follow Option 2, you will see the "IDC Research.dotm" file listed under the "Recently Used Templates" section in the New Document dialog box You can simply click the "IDC Research.dotm" file to create the new document

Creating a New Pivot Table in Excel 2007 The IDC Pivot Table Template ensures that Pivot Tables created in Excel 2007 are compatible with earlier versions of Excel, as well as other Spreadsheet applications. If you have the Office 2007 IDC Research Template installed, you can create a new Pivot Table workbook by selecting: Start--> Programs-->IDC Templates-->Create New Pivot Table File IMPORTANT: The macros in the workbook ensure the workbook is saved as an Excel 2000 file, which is required for the Pivot Table to be usable in previous versions of Excel. If you choose to save the file as an Excel 2007 file, you will receive a warning that the Pivot Table will not work in previous versions of Excel

If Macros are not enabled in 2007 Versions of IDC Excel Table & Figure Tool and/or Pivot Table Template… In the Office 2000 version of the Excel Table and Figure tool, the user is prompted to enable the macros each time the tool is opened In the Office 2007 version, the Excel file will open without enabling the macros. The user is notified that macros have been disabled (as shown in red boxed area in below Figure)

Set Trusted Locations on your Hard Drive… Identify trusted locations (folders) on hard drive. For example, a PS&T Production Coordinator may have three folders on his/her "C" drive to which they save and from which they access IDC Excel Table and Figure files: Corrections; Login; and Web Conversion. From an Open Excel 2007 file, Click the Office Button found in the upper left-hand corner and select “Excel Options” found at the bottom. Click “Trust Center” (left-hand side), then “Trust Center Settings” (bottom right).

Click the "Add-ins" tab and select "Document Conversion." If you do not see the "Document Conversion" button, click the small right arrow at the far right of the screen Select "Save as Word 2007" to save the Template file in 2007 format. Close the original file. Open the newly created .docx file from your hard drive, which ensures that the document is attached to the 2007 version of the IDC Research Template. This process must be followed to ensure document is saved in the correct IDC Research Template and that all IDC Research Template functionality is active.

Converting a Non-template Word 2000 File to Word 2007 To Convert Non-Template Word Documents Open the non-template Word document in Word 2007. Click the Office Button and choose "Save As." Converting an IDC Excel Table and Figure Tool from 2000 to 2007 There is no way to convert an IDC Excel Table and Figure File created in Excel 2000 to the Excel 2007 format. The Compatibility Pack can be downloaded from: IDC Employees: http://www.insideidc.com/download/pst/FileFormatConverters.exe Non-IDC Users: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displaylang=en

User Cannot Open Word 2007 Research Document: Unable to Retrieve Metadata Any user — both inside and outside of IDC — who opens IDC's research (Word 2007) documents must install a patch from Microsoft. This patch fixes a bug that causes our research documents to become corrupted. It's installed on all IDC managed equipment as part of the Office 2007 installation, but anyone else will need to install it. IMPORTANT: If the patch is not downloaded and an IDC research document becomes corrupted, there is no way to retrieve the metadata. The IDC Analyst/Project Manager will have to revert to an older version of the document — or ask the IT Help Desk to detach the document from the template, which will allow the IDC Analyst/Project Manager to open the corrupt document and copy and paste the text into a new research document. IDC employees and non-IDC users may download the REQUIRED metadata patch as shown on the next slide:

User Cannot Open Word 2007 Research Document: Unable to Retrieve Metadata (Continued) Required Metadata Patch for Those Who Are Not Using Office 2007 IDC Employees who have not yet installed Office 2007 http://www.insideidc.com/download/pst/FileFormatConverters.exe Non-IDC users who do not have Office 2007 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displaylang=en Required Metadata Patch for Office 2007 Users IDC Employees who have installed Office 2007: http://www.insideidc.com/download/pst/word2007-kb974561-fullfile-x86-glb.exe Non-IDC users who are working in Office 2007: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=30bca927-5799-4d0d-8da9-fa9f9c50560e Once the file has finished downloading, quit MS Word then double-click the file to run the installer.

User Cannot Activate Track Changes Function in Word 2007 IDC Research Document If the track changes functionality is grayed out, it could be that the user: Did not use the Document Conversion macro when converting a Word 2000 IDC research document to Word 2007. To Fix: Save the file to your hard drive and then open in Word 2007 Use the Document Converter macro (on the Add-Ins Tab); select “Save as Word 2007”. The Word 2007 version of the Template is applied, and the file will be saved to your hard drive as *.docxx Close the document Go to your hard drive and rename the *.docxx file to *.docx Open the newly created *.docx file Created a new research document in Word 2007 but selected the Word 2000 version of the IDC Research Template (*.dot) instead of the Word 2007 version (*.dotm). Converted a Word 2000 document into Word 2007 but did not close the original document and open the .docx version from his/her hard drive.
