Bandura-Abridged

Background Pavlov’s Dog Little Albert Benefits, Punishments, and Conditioning Behaviorism

Aim/hypothesis If a behavior is observed, it will be imitated. If a behavior is not observed, it will not be imitated. Boys will copy a male model more than a female model and vice versa Boys will be more predisposed towards aggression.

Methodology Lab experiment Matched pairs design

Variables IV1- Three conditions: Aggressive, Non-Aggressive, No Model IV2-Sex of Model IV3-Sex of Children DV-Number out of 240 in response categories

Participants 36 boys and 36 girls aged 37-69 months. Likely an opportunity sample.

Procedure 1. Determine pre-aggression levels (nursery teacher, 5 point scales) 2. Room 1, potato prints and stickers, taken to other side for modeling/not modeling. 3.Specific behaviors exhibited like throwing the model, punching it and saying “Sock it in the nose,” striking it with a mallet. 4. After 10 minutes, taken to room 2. Given good toys and then taken away. Aggression Arousal 5. Room 3, taken to room with both aggressive and non-aggressive toys. Given 20 minutes. Behavior observed

Data Quantitative Imitative-aggressive physical Imitative-aggressive verbal Partial imitative Non-imitative

Apparatus (Scratch out Data Analysis) Room 1: Table, chair, Bobo doll, stickers, mallet and peg board, tinker toys Room 2: Fire engine, train, spinning top, doll set Room 3: One way mirror, 3 foot Bobo doll, mallet, tea set, crayons, etc…

Main Findings All four hypothesis supported

Conclusions Behavior that is observed is likely to be imitated

Strengths Nature/nurture debate Highly controlled Confident IV affects DV Quantitative and objective data Naïve participants

Weaknesses Low ecological validity Lacks mundane realism Ethics of working with children

Ecological Validity Real toys and play area similar to daycare, but done in a lab with unrealistic time constraints

Ethics D – R – I - C - H –

Usefulness As applies to past theory and every day situations. Parenting, television, role models, peer influences, video games, etc…

Relationship to approach Observational learning Gender-specific behavior Children influenced by adults

Relationship to issues Generalisations Ecological Validity Usefulness Behaviorist perspective
