ALCOHOL Alcohol is a drug. It is the drug most abused by teens. Alcohol is a depressant. A depressant slows the function of the central nervous system. Alcohol blocks some of the messages trying to get to the brain.

ALCOHOL You must be 21 years old to legally buy and consume alcohol. 3 types: beer, wine, liquor Alcohol is created when grains, fruits, or vegetables are fermented. Fermentation is a process that uses yeast or bacteria to change the sugars in the food into alcohol.

TERMS Blood alcohol concentration (BAC): the amount of alcohol contained in a person's blood. Adult drivers are considered legally intoxicated if their BAC is .08 % and above. Intoxication Binge drinking: drinking a lot of alcohol in a very short amount of time. This can lead to vomiting, unconsciousness, or even death. Blackout: a loss of memory of what happened during a period of time

ALCOHOL: HARMFUL EFFECTS When people drink alcohol, it's absorbed into their bloodstream. From there, it affects the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord), which controls virtually all body functions. Like many drugs, alcohol changes a person's ability to think, speak, and see things as they really are. A person might lose his or her balance and have trouble walking properly. The person might feel relaxed and happy, and later start crying, or get in an argument.

ALCOHOL: HARMFUL EFFECTS Do or say things you don’t mean Hurt yourself or others Especially if driving a car Reaction times are slowed dramatically Vomit Hangover: a severe headache or other after effects caused by drinking an excess of alcohol Nausea, vomiting, tiredness, irritability

ALCOHOL: HARMFUL EFFECTS Liver damage The liver removes poisons from the blood Alcoholic hepatitis: inflammation of the liver caused by excessive alcohol consumption over a long period of time. Cirrhosis: scarring of the liver Damage to pancreas, heart, brain

ALCOHOL: HARMFUL EFFECTS Alcohol poisoning occurs when large amounts of alcohol are consumed in a short period of time. Violent vomiting Extreme sleepiness Unconsciousness Difficulty breathing Dangerously low blood sugar Seizures Death may result

ALCOHOLISM Alcoholism means that someone frequently drinks too much alcohol and can't stop. They are addicted to it. Someone who has alcoholism craves alcohol. The person has little control over his or her drinking and can't stop without help. A person who starts drinking alcohol at a young age is more likely to develop alcoholism.

QUITTING DON’T EVER START Tell friends or family so you have their support Distract yourself with healthier activities Cold turkey

SUPPORT GROUPS AA: Alcoholics Anonymous “Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.”

SUPPORT GROUPS Al-Anon/Alateen “At Al‑Anon Family Group meetings, the friends and family members of problem drinkers share their experiences and learn how to apply the principles of the Al‑Anon program to their individual situations. Younger family members and friends attend Alateen meetings.”
