Presentation transcript:

I’m cold can I borrow your jumper? One size fits all? I’m cold can I borrow your jumper? In the same way that we are not all going to fit into or like the same jumper in this room, Postmodernists argue that just because two families are both middle class they won’t automatically have the same set up or be like each other. They also point out that there will be a wide variety of family types and set ups with in one ethnic group. Errr…. What is the link between this image and the new right view on the family?

Although your A levels need you to be at your most mature sometimes you need to be more like this little guy and always ask… Unrealistic view? But Why??? Segregated gender roles? Family under threat? Social policy: problem and solution? 1 family type better than all the rest? An underclass spoiling society for the rest of us? Just to clarify this doesn’t give you permission to have a tantrum when you don’t get what you want

Now to put this knowledge into exam action Suggest three criticisms that other sociologists may make of the New Right view of the family. (6 marks) Structure is the key here, keep it clear. Describe then criticise x3 This is really important, you need to show the examiner that you know the theory. However your main marks will come from the criticism (that’s what the question is asking you to do!) so keep your descriptions short, 1-2 sentences maximum

If we were going to move this onto a 20 mark question what would we need? Evaluation points! Support of the New Right perspective would come from: Criticisms would come from:

You must include key terms You have 15 minutes for this task Your task Using your notes, textbooks and hand outs answer the following questions: 1)What do we mean by per modern. Modern and postmodern society and what are the characteristics of each? 2) What are Anthony Giddens views on relationships in the modern world? 3) What are Beck and Beck Gernsheim’s views?

Now the Postmodernists! How are families diverse? Is one type of family better than another? There are now so many different types of families that perhaps the traditional cereal packet family is no longer the only “ideal” type. For post modernists Variety is the spice of life!

Key theorist: Judith Stacy Judith Stacey suggests that a single individual will experience a variety of family structures throughout their life span and that there is no dominant type of family in contemporary society

Key theorists: Pakulski & Walters Pakulski & Walters state that in contemporary society the roles people take on in a family are a matter of choice, not obligation and that traditional gender roles are no longer fixed. They argue that the roles we take on are influenced by the media and advertising

Your task Using your hand outs, text books and notes complete a focus on five on Judith Stacey:

Now onto the big essay… We are going to plan the following essay Outline and evaluate New Right views on the family…..
