Types of Characters

These are the common types of characters we see in literature. Round characters Flat characters Dynamic characters Static characters

Round Characters Round characters seem like real people. Have many sides to their personalities. Detailed enough to seem real and tend to be more developed physically, mentally, and emotionally. .

Flat Character Flat characters don’t seem like real people. Often have fewer sides to their personalities. Tend to be minor characters who are “stock” characters such as the stereotypical “ditz”, tough guy, class clown, etc.

Dynamic Character Characters who go through a dramatic change during the course of the story. Changes include new insight, understanding, commitment, and or values. The protagonist is usually a dynamic character. . Scrooge changes from a tight-fisted, greedy unhappy man to one who was generous and loved life. Gru changes from a villain set on destroying the world to a loving father.

Static Character Static characters do not change dramatically in the story. Static characters stay the same throughout the course of the story.

Dynamic, Static, Flat or Round characters are also a Protagonist or Antagonist

Protagonist The Protagonist is central to the action of a story and moves against the antagonist.

Antagonist The antagonist is the villain or a force which opposes the protagonist. A “force” doesn’t have to be a person. It might be a storm, an inner turmoil, or animal.
