NEWARK LIBERTY AIRPORT LOCAL AREA AUGMENTATION SYSTEM OPERATIONAL DEMONSTRATION

Purpose Demonstrate Local Area Augmentation System (LAAS) operational capabilities in a complex airspace Combine on-board RNAV/RNP functionality (e.g. multimode receiver) with LAAS improved straight-in and curved path capabilities for approach & landing to all runway ends Tool to solve airspace congestion issues Build user base - controller & pilot operational experience Reduce airspace separation between current New York Area Airports for more independent operations, including closely spaced parallel runways “Lessons Learned” may be applied in the New York and Eastern Seaboard area, potentially to other locations

Overview Government Industry Partnership Boeing Federal Aviation Administration The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Continental Airlines (multiple B737-800 NG aircraft) Honeywell (ground system) Boeing Aircraft technical integration Assist with procedure development (Jeppesen) Single LAAS unit installed at Newark Airport Serve multiple runway ends at that airport Could replace multiple ILS facilities 48 distinct precision and complex approach procedures
