Learning objective: Understand how campaign logos and slogans sum up issues and attract the reader’s attention

Stop this illegal trade. Save tigers now. Choose one of the boxes and explain how they have tried to: - Make the issues sound important - Attract the reader’s attention Demand for palm oil – used in food and ‘green’ biofuel – has never been higher. But burning down rainforest to make way for oil palm plantations destroys natural habitats and adds to global warming. Protect the rainforests. Support life. Every year in the UK 18 million tonnes of food end up in landfill. While half the world is starving, the other half throws away more than it can eat. Love food. Hate waste. A hundred years ago there were about 100,000 tigers in the wild. Today there are around 3,000. Tigers are killed for their body parts, used in traditional medicine. Stop this illegal trade. Save tigers now.

Greenpeace, WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature), Friends of the Earth, RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) – there are thousands of organisations campaigning to protect nature, and all of them want out help. So how do they attract reader’s attention and get their message across?

From first glance: What do you think the organisation campaigns for? How has the font, colour, image, slogan/name, placement of words/image been used to get the message across? Logo Slogan Name

Homework task: Find 5 logos with their slogans and stick them in your book. Annotate how the font, colour, image, slogan, name and word/image placement have been used to draw the reader in and how they link to their overall message and campaign. Due in Tues 20th September

Vote for the slogan you think best conveys the message and explain your choice. Invent a campaign name and design a logo to go with the slogan you have chosen. Never refuse to recycle and reuse. Recycle your trash or you’ll trash the Earth. Don’t throw it away: use it another day. Recycle today for a cleaner tomorrow. Don’t be a fool: recycling is cool!

Which patterns of language can you find in the slogans? Example Words that rhyme Imperative verbs that tell you what to do Recycle Contrasts Today/tomorrow Two clauses joined with a colon Abbreviations Range of punctuation Alliteration Repetition Never refuse to recycle and reuse. Recycle your trash or you’ll trash the Earth. Don’t throw it away: use it another day. Recycle today for a cleaner tomorrow. Don’t be a fool: recycling is cool!

Try to use some of these techniques: As you pack away, invent a slogan that you think will encourage young people to recycle their rubbish. Try to use some of these techniques: rhyme imperative verbs contrasts two clauses joined with a colon abbreviations range of punctuation alliteration repetition
