Presentation transcript:

Building Blocks of the Universe Student Outcome: I will explain the ways building blocks combine to create all of the substances in the universe by acting out vocab terms and by completing a written/ drawn response.

How are biology and chemistry related? http://htwins.net/scale2/

Charades 5 minutes to act out six words One word for each person Guessers can see the word but not the definition. Actor can see the word and the definition. ALL words must be acted out. No talking may be done by the actor. Helpful hint: Important words are in bold.

Periodic Table of Elements What is different about the elements? How are the elements organized? Is their a system to the table?

What is different about each element? Atomic number Number of protons, neutrons, and electrons Symbol Atomic mass State – solid, liquid, gas

Vocab Atom Element Molecule Smallest unit of matter Cannot be broken down Element Pure substance only made of 1 type of atom Periodic table Molecule Group of atoms held together by bonds

Building Blocks of the Universe Student Outcome: I will explain the ways building blocks combine to create all of the substances in the universe… So what are the building blocks?

Types of bonds Covalent bond Ionic bond bond formed by the sharing of one or more electrons, between atoms (need to add something about C forming 4 and that leads to large molecules) Ionic bond Bond formed by one atom giving away electron to another atom No sharing

Think about it… What does the four “empty seats” allow for?

So remember… Bond, Ionic Bond, taken not shared! Co means together Coworker Coexist Combine Community

Types of bonds Hydrogen bond + + Types of bonds - Hydrogen bond Bond formed when a positive (+) hydrogen atom of one molecule is attracted to a negative (-) atom of another molecule. Creates partially + and partially - ends + - + - + +

Types of bonds Configuration of atoms affects molecules properties

Building Blocks of the Universe Student Outcome: I will explain the ways building blocks combine to create all of the substances in the universe… What ways do the building blocks combine?

Water Molecule http://www.sciencegeek.net/eChem/eChem.html Build your own Think about what the different colors represent Then draw and label your molecules on the back of the note sheet.

Extension Answer the following question on a separate sheet of paper. You may answer using a written or drawn response. Explain the ways building blocks combine to create all of the substances in the universe.
